Kibitzer's Corner
May-18-04  Whitehat1963: Good performance from Marshall. What's the finish?
May-18-04  BeautyInChess: I think that after 38. ... Kb7 Rxh7 black has a problem if he attempts to take the g7 pawn and trade rooks. Yet if he doesn't take the g pawn and trade rooks then the h pawn will help reinforce the g pawn. He is going to lose the c4 pawn immediately and the d3 pawn eventually. White will then prepare to push the h pawn to promotion and the threat should allow white to win the d3 pawn. It looks pretty hopeless as black. There are too many threats. That's my assessment but I'm only a USCF B player.
Feb-23-06  MorphyMatt: What was Capa thinking with 23... ♗xg5 ??
May-01-06  patzer2: Capa gets in trouble trying to play into Marshall's strength in an open game with the Max Lange. Capa plays the opening OK, but IMO starts to go astray with 18...b5?!

Instead 18... Ne5 19. Qh3
Kb8 20. g5 Nf7 21. Qe3 Nxg5 22. Nxg5 Bxg5 23. Qxg5 Qxg5+ 24. Bxg5 Rxg7 25. f4 h6 26. h4 hxg5 27. fxg5 Rh8 (+0.59 @ 15 depth) seems to give Black reasonable counter chances in the endgame.

Nov-17-06  who: <patzer2> see benzol's comments on Capablanca vs Marshall, 1925 - they agreed to play the max lange before hand.
Apr-15-07  BipolarChessorder: I think 39...Kb7 40. Bd4 and black is helpless against either 41. Rxh7 and 42. Rh8 or 41. Rf5 and 42. Rf8

BLACK TO PLAY

In the diagrammed position Capablanca played 16...Be7 in this game. Three months before (in Hamburg, on July 10, 1910) Tarrasch had played 16...Bd6 against Marshall, and the latter won too. See game in this link: Marshall vs Tarrasch, 1910
