Jan-11-05  molinov: I don't understand the purpose of 36.... Qf6.It seems that it allows 37.Bd4 winning a tempo with the subsequent attack on the a1-h8 diagonal.
Jan-11-05  drukenknight: why does he resign anyhow?
Jan-11-05  iron maiden: Incomplete game score maybe? Perhaps Ray could help us out.

Sneaky: White is utterly won, I don't see what the debate is about. Like Dzindzi said, "I have the pawn AND the compenstation!"
Jan-11-05  acirce: Can't Black try to create counterplay with 43..b5, I'm not convinced that it is necessarily <utterly won>. At least I would have played on.

Sneaky: OK, maybe he's just "simply won" instead of "utterly won." I think ...b5 is met with just taking on b5 before or after Re7+. If the d-pawn falls and White gets an advanced passer, Black can say uncle, no? Truth be told, I'd play on too, but of course my tournament opponents are not Henrique Mecking!
Jan-11-05  Hanada: Black got completely outplayed in this one. I think that explains the "premature" resignation. Mecking was apparently on his game.

OK let's say 44.cxb5 axb5 45.Re7+ Kf6 46.Re6+ Kf5 47.Rxd6 Ra8 48.Rb6 Rxa2 49.Rxb5 Ke5 or something and I give Black good chances even two pawns down thanks to his active pieces. It may be won, but doesn't look elementary.

Sneaky: "I give Black good chances even two pawns down" you are an eternal optimist acirce! The only person I know who could screw up that rook ending is me. ;-)
May-18-06  Caissanist: Keep in mind that this was 1971, which means that the game was probably adjourned and 43.Re1 would have been Mecking's sealed move. I imagine that the game ended something like this: Mecking goes out to have dinner and a few drinks in the hotel restaurant, tells everybody who will listen what his sealed move was and what the winning plan is, then goes to bed early so he can be rested in time for the second session. Meanwhile, Keene stays up until five o'clock in the morning, eating room service burgers and drinking stale coffee, while he tears the position apart looking for a miracle. Finally convinced that there is none, he goes to bed without setting the alarm and perhaps notifies a tournament official that he is resigning. Next morning Mecking shows up and is either told that his opponent has resigned or has to spend an hour playing skittles with the kids in the B section while he waits for Keene's clock to run out. Lots of games used to end this way, including many where the final position had a lot more fight than this one. One famous example was Spassky vs Fischer, 1972.

ray keene: this is complete nonsense-i was annoyed at having made a complete mess of a perfeclty playable position and i didnt even adjourn the game-of course i shd have played ..b5 and struggled on-black has some defensive chances-whether enough is hard to say.
