Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Hastings 1971/72

The 47th Hastings Christmas Chess Festival (1) was held at the end of the year 1971. In expansion over the previous year, sixteen grandmasters and masters were invited to compete in a round robin format at the premier event. The complete list of participants included (in order of ELO): Viktor Korchnoi (2670), Svetozar Gligoric (2600), Wolfgang Unzicker (2545), Anatoli Karpov (2540), Henrique Mecking (2540), Miguel Najdorf (2530), Helmut Pfleger (2515), Ulf Andersson (2510), Robert Byrne (2510), Peter Markland (2510), Bojan Kurajica (2490), Raymond Keene (2465), Victor Ciocaltea (2460), George Botterill (2410), William Hartston (2390) and Michael Franklin (2345). The average of the combined ratings of all the players qualified the tournament as a Category XI event. Karpov and Korchnoi tied for first place, each with +7 at the final. In less than three years they would be facing each other for the right to challenge for the world championship. This would eventually be awarded to Karpov, whose win here put him alongside Alexander Alekhine and Max Euwe as players who won Hastings on the way to become world champion.

The final standings and crosstable:
