Apr-02-04 | | Kenkaku: Quite a crushing victory, largely positional but with a nice tactical flourish at the end. |
Jul-14-05 | | notyetagm: <Those White f5-knights are so damn powerful.> Here the White knight arrives on the f5-square on move 18 and just nine moves later begins the decisive combination by <clearing> the path for the White f3-queen to attack the loose f7-square with 27 ♘xg7! ♔xg7 28 ♖h7+!! ♔xh7 29 ♕xf7+ and resigns due to 29 ... ♔h8 30 ♖h1+ ♖h6 31 ♖xh6#. |
Oct-31-05 | | witty: for a change i am first. quite easy but it took me some time to find out the line. |
Oct-31-05 | | patzer2: Fred Reinfeld, in "1001 Winning Chess Sacrifices and Combinations" has (28. ?) as number 480, under the "Removing the Guard" theme. If I am not mistaken, Informant in it's 1980 Encyclopedia of Chess Middle Games classifies this tactic as "annihilation of defense."
In any event. 28. Rh7+! deflects the King off the critical g7+ (removing the guard) to set up a mating attack with 29. Qxf7+ followed by 30. Rh1+ . |
Oct-31-05 | | erikcu: Last weeks zugzwang (however you spell that) theme had me miss just about every puzzle. Back to deflection, something I am more familiar with. |
Oct-31-05 | | mandar: Tois was really easy for me.I found this in perfectly 2 second. Was this really easy or am i improving? |
Oct-31-05 | | snowie1: Tsk! I moved the correct piece, but only to h5 in prep for Rxg5+ and double up with Q later...too slow. |
Oct-31-05 | | themindset: <mandar> Monday puzzles are always the easiest, they get more difficult every day with Sunday's puzzle being the most difficult. |
Oct-31-05 | | Averageguy: I got this in a few seconds. |
Oct-31-05 | | prinsallan: Monday Monday. Easy Easy. |

 | | al wazir: Why didn't Tarrasch either let Pillsbury finish checkmating him or else resign after 28. Rh7+ ? Did he not see that 29. Qxf7+ was coming, or did he want to make sure Pillsbury knew what he was doing? |
Oct-31-05 | | erimiro1: Obvious, but at least no arguments about zugzwangs... |
Oct-31-05 | | cuendillar: <al wazir> Maybe he wanted the audience to understand the resignation easier. |
Oct-31-05 | | jcr2001: ah! I saw the right move, only couldnt find the checkmate. Was looking at Qxe6 and Qh5+... my visualisation wasnt powerful enough to see that the rook was able to mate. |
Oct-31-05 | | Koster: Tarrasch was not in good form and made some funny moves. For instance two moves to get the pawn to c5, then after Bd2 retreats the knight instead of the obvious Nxb3, keeping the QB to protect f5. Nh7-g5xf3 didn't seem to help much. As Fischer once said Black trades one piece and a stronger one replaces it so he hasn't really stopped White's attack. g5 was a quick way to lose but it could be there was no good move at that point. |
Oct-31-05 | | TopaLove: If the theme is "Removing the Guard" I´m sure we will have Tal this week. |
Oct-31-05 | | erimiro1: <Koster>Looks like you're right. Interesting that Pillsbury let Tarrasch take the white bishop, by 6. N-c3 instead of the modern variation of 6.Re1 with c3 and Bc2, but the doctor refused! The combination itself was simple, made possible by the horrible 23. - g5?? |
Oct-31-05 | | RookFile: I'm a little surprised that Tarrasch
waited for Pillsbury to play 28. Rh7+.
For both men at the board, this was
surely an obvious continuation. |
Oct-31-05 | | AniamL: Good deflection by the dough boy. |
Oct-31-05 | | zb2cr: Found it in a matter of seconds. I love Mondays! |
Oct-31-05 | | YouRang: I found it, but it took a minute because I was looking for more (checkmate, win the queen, etc.). The solution just wins a pawn (or two -- the g-pawn will fall soon), but it's certainly leaves white with a winning game. |
Oct-31-05 | | psmith: <YouRang> No, the solution leads to mate with Rh1. |
Oct-31-05 | | Eric Xanthus: Not sure what you are looking at, <YouRang>. This position is mate in 2: 29..Kh8 30.Rh1+ Rh6 31.Rxh6# |
Oct-31-05 | | sheaf: <YouRang> ? 29..Kh8 30. Rh1 Rh6 31. Rxh6#, on mondays they dont ask puzzles involving winning a pawn or two, its more decisive than that usually.. |
Oct-31-05 | | DoctorChess: Ahh..nothing like a (Deflection) on a Monday. A beautiful tactical device. "The puzzles increase in difficulty each day of the week. Monday being the easiest. Got it under 10 seconds. |
