Oct-15-11  sevenseaman: How come <tacticalmonster>'s post is dated <Sep-15-2011>? Is he really the <time-traveler> who solved the POTD full one month before it appeared. <e=mc square>??

Or he is on the <CG> staff and knew what was to come a month later.

<I am bewildered>, please help me.

Oct-15-11  Mikey00004: actually it appears as if this POTD has appeared on multiple occasions

Phony Benoni: <sevenseaman> This puzzle was also used on May 16, 2004. He may be working on some of the old puzzles, and just happened to hit this one recently.
Oct-15-11  sevenseaman: Aah, what a splash! <tm> landed on a flying saucer! Thanks <PB>, my sanity <was> in peril.
Oct-15-11  thegoldenband: I saw up to 32...♖f2+, but somehow missed that ...♕xh1 was possible after 33. ♔xf2 ♕f3+ 34. ♔f1.
Oct-15-11  morfishine: Played <30...R8e3>

After <31.Bxd7 Rxg3+ 32.Kf1> Here, I missed 32...Rxf2+ and went with <32...Rd3 33.Qa7 ((33.Qf6? allows 33...Rxf2+))...R3d2>

Here, I am at a loss as to how white can stop 34...Qd3 which carries the dual threat: (1) 35...Qxb1+ & (2) 35...Rxf2+ [double-check].

34.Bf5 seems inadequate due to 34...Qxd5

Oct-15-11  sevenseaman: But<morf> you haven't missed anything. 32...Rxf2 is a solution, yours is another, equally sound. (see <tacticalmonster>'s post of 15 Sep 2011). Your solution is equally viable and original. Well done.
Oct-15-11  morfishine: <sevenseaman> Sold! Today, the glass is half-full, so one must be satisfied with partial credit

Would've been nice to find Nunn's Grandmaster move <32...Rxf2+> (like you and others were able to identify)

Oct-15-11  Marmot PFL: Didn't have a lot of time for this, but 30...Re8-e3 and 31...Rxg3+ looks winning.
Oct-15-11  kevin86: both rook must go-and black is the exchange ahead.
Oct-15-11  Six66timesGenius: Both R8e3 and Nc5! Was decisive attack!
Oct-15-11  jackalope: <Morfishine> I think 32... Rd3 lets White back in the game with 33. Ba4 or am I seeing phantoms?

I saw up to 32... Rf2+ but couldn't visualize a continuation after 33. Ke1 - had to play it out to find 33... Rfg2 34. Ba4 Rxh3 35. Rxh3 Qxh3 36. Qf2 Qh2 37. Qf1 Qg3+ 38. Kd1 Rg1 39. Qxg1 Qxg1+

Now Black has a queen against White's LSB and one rook.

Oct-15-11  JohnAnthony: I found the R8e3 and Rxg3 moves. I followed ...Kf1 with Qf3 though. Need to think more brutally. Love Nunn.
Oct-15-11  lost in space: Saw the idea quite quickly up to 32...Rxf2, so I give me full credit even though I haven't seen 34....Rf3+
Oct-15-11  jackalope: I don't understand 11. Bd3 - White gives up the bishop pair, loses castling and winds up with doubled f pawns. Seems like 11. Bh2 would have been better.

Any comments?

Well spotted. I also thought 32 ... Rd3 was equally good, in fact was rather pleased with myself for finding this alternative line. Seems it was ??

LIFE Master AJ: Several false tries, like 30...RxP/f2+. (Spent quite a bit of time analyzing this one ... before I gave up on it.)

After about 10 minutes, (give-or-take); I would say 30...R/e8-e3! [I probably exceeded the time limit today ...]

The threat is ...RxP/g3+; with a winning attack. If White can conjure a way to counter this, I cannot see it. (I guess he grabs the Knight with 31.BxN/d7, ... and hopes that Black makes a mistake.)

Time to check ...

Oct-15-11  sevenseaman: <jackalope> 33. Ba4 is a very good counter that I overlooked in the <morfishine> line. But your end position with Q against a R and a B should win.
Oct-15-11  jackalope: Thanks <Scormus> - I'm learning a great deal from Kibitzers such as yourself, Mikey00004, Sevenseaman, Morfishine and many others.

This site, with its very active forums, is an incredible resource for anyone wishing to improve their chess skills.

Oct-15-11  morfishine: <jackalope> and <sevenseaman> You are right! I know what happened. Mental error in the most literal sense
Oct-15-11  BOSTER: Even during seven years we did not find how black would win after 30...R8e3 if white played 31.Kf1.

-6,15 is more than enough for a black win

Oct-15-11  lost in space: ohh, just saw that <hms123> was a bit faster than me. But my wife told me that it is not always best to be first.
