ray keene: has anyone ever analysed or suggested 19nxb5 followed by rac1 and b4? can black defend?
Oct-24-06  fja4: One continuation...

19.Nxb5 axb5 20.Rc1 Nfe4 21.Bxc5+ Nxc5 22.b4 Bf6 23.Nd3 Ra8 24.Rxc5 Rxa2 25.Kf3...White would be up 2pawns after Rxb5

Jun-05-10  Ulhumbrus: If on 19 Nxb5 Black tries the counter-attack 19...Na4, after 20 Nd6 Rc2 Black's Rook on the second rank may provide sufficient compensation for the pawn, eg after 21 Nd6xf7 Rxe2.
Jun-05-10  ounos: But then 22. Nxd8, piece up
Jun-05-10  Ulhumbrus: Ulhumbrus: <ounos: But then 22. Nxd8, piece up> Yes, my mistake. On 21 Ndxf7 Black has to play 21...Bb6 first.
Jun-24-14  zydeco: Reshevsky, annotating this game in the tournament book, doesn't notice 19.Nxb5. He's very harsh on Panno's passive handling of the middle game -- 21....Ke8 misses the chance for 21.....e5; 22....Ba5 is a 'needless and costly waste of time' (22.....Ng4 is better); 23.....Bd8 is 'a sign of indecision and the jitters.' After 29.....Ba3? (better 29....b4), white has a significant advantage.

Very good find by GM Keene. I put the position in chessgamescom's computer move analysis and it came up with this:

1) +1.60 (31 ply) 19.Nxb5 Nce4 20.Na7 Rc2 21.Nac6 Be7 22.Nxe7 Kxe7 23.Nd3 Nd5 24.Bd4 f6 25.Rc1 Rxc1 26.Nxc1 e5 27.Ba7 Nd2 28.Nd3 e4 29.Nb4 Nxb4 30.Bc5+ Ke6 31.Bxb4 Nc4 32.b3 Ne5 33.Bc3 h5 34.Kf1 g5 35.Bxe5 Kxe5 36.Ke1 Kd4 37.Kd2 g4 38.b4 e3+ 39.fxe3+ Kc4 40.a3 Kb3

One minute analysis.

ray keene: Great to be vindicated by the all seeing engines! I can't believe Reshevsky missed this, he was, after all, present at the tournament.
