chancho: Just when you think you got the master right where you want him, he comes up with the deathblow.
Nov-03-08  RookFile: It's funny. When white played 13. Bh6, I never even considered moving the black rook. Black should have been happy to return the exchange immediately in that situation.
Nov-03-08  Strongest Force: I dont get it. What is a strong master doing losing to a lesser GM in a simul?
Dec-01-09  cehertan: Answer: It wasn't a simul! (never underestimate the "database randomness factor"!) It was the GHI (a health insurance co.) New York International. I was an upstart 17 year old playing in my first international and he beat the !@$% out of me! I remember being quite upset because I needed a draw to make a FIDE rating (2200 was the minimum back then). Petursson, already a seasoned IM, was consoling, telling me it was "better to come in higher", i.e. have a better 1st ratable performance, as FIDE ratings go up and down slower than USCF. I did finally come in with a bang two years later at the Philly International before the World Open. Still rated only an expert, I beat a 2250, John Donaldson, and Calvin Blocker (2500+) in the first 3 rounds and nearly beat GM Gheorghiu in a game he stuck in the informant! To my consternation, though, I didn't "come in very high"--despite a 2395 performance I was given a 2280 first rating! Another Elo mystery...As a postscript to the Philly tourney, Jack Peters finally slowed my momentum by beating me with the famous and beautiful Lasker position, which impressed me so much I went out and bought Rook Endings by Smyslov and Levenfish, a tremendous investment since it greatly improved my understanding of endgames!

<17...♕xe8> Or 17...e5 18.♗g7+ ♔g8 19.♗f6! ♕d7 (or ♕e6) 20.♕h5 ♕g4 ▢ - and now white can simply exchange ♕♕s and take the 'a8' ♖ - ps: oh well, from the diagram plus ...e5 other moves win too - ♕d6, ♘d6 etc

<cehertan> That's really a fine historical narrative
