tamar: This game has puzzled me since I saw it, because Steinitz uncharacteristically sacrifices the exchange (25 Rxf4) for nebulous attacking chances.

I've looked at 25 Qa5 this morning, and it may explain what Steinitz wanted. It leaves the d4 pawn unprotected, but then the exchange sacrifice on f4 gives White an edge.

After 25 Qa5 Rxd4 26 Rxf4 Rxf4 27 Rc8+
Rf8 (27....Qf8 is the gloomy alternative) 28 Qxa7!

White is better. and certainly does not risk defeat. Shredder 8 gives a .93 edge.
