Honza Cervenka: It is hard to say where black went wrong. Maybe 15...gxh5 16.Qf5 f6 17.Qxh5 fxe5 18.Nxe5 Qe8 was a lesser evil.
Aug-27-22  Nerwal: If we can't find any subsantial improvement later on, that means the decision 9... d5 was likely wrong.
Aug-27-22  Retireborn: I don't like 9...d5 either; Black should play 9...e5 himself, or else something like 9...Nh5 (plan ...Nf4) 10.Nf3 e5 11.dxe5 dxe5 12.Rd1 Qe7 13.Bg5 Nf6.

perfidious: On the face of it, the idea Malich's ninth move was positionally well motivated: he has already exchanged his worst minor piece in these Pirc/Modern/Alekhine's structures and was steering towards a favourable ending by saddling White with the bad bishop, both while keeping the breaks ....c5 and ....f6 in reserve. These pluses, however, came at too great a cost in my opinion; White was given too free a hand on the kingside and was able to denude the pawn cover in front of his own king with impunity, such was his advantage on that wing. This, of course, required superb calculation, always a great strength of Polugaevsky.
