Jan-28-16  Howard: Going into this game, Portisch was down by a point, with only three games left to go. So, he couldn't exactly play it safe in this game.

It's always bothered me that Hubner scored such a significant upset in this match...especially given what happened when he played Korchnoi in the Candidates final.

The story about THAT is well-known.

perfidious: <....It's always bothered me that Hubner scored such a significant upset in this match....>

Why was this 'a significant upset'?

On balance, I should have considered Portisch the favourite going in, but not distinctly odds-on to win. Huebner was quite a capable player and gave Korchnoi all he could handle before coming unstuck in the final.

The upset would have been Huebner prevailing over Korchnoi.

<...especially given what happened when he played Korchnoi in the Candidates final.>

It is most unfortunate that Huebner was so gifted, yet with a tendency towards psychological instability, which manifested itself at critical moments.

Jan-29-16  Howard: According to Chess Life, Portisch was "heavily favored" over Huebner, and to most observers both this match and Korchnoi's one against Polugaevsky were considered "mere formalities to an inevitable Korchnoi-Portisch showdown in the Candidates finals".

To be fair, it might be debatable as to what Portisch was favored over Huebner, but he was unquestionably the better player.

perfidious: Portisch being 'heavily favoured' was droll indeed, given that he was 2655 on the January 1980 FIDE list, while Huebner was 2600.
Nov-16-17  Howard: Anyone know where one can obtain the FIDE list for July, 1980? Doesn't seem to be on the FIDE website.
Nov-16-17  Retireborn: It'll be in Informator, if you have the relevant volume, otherwise you can find this info on the olimpbase site.
Nov-16-17  Olavi: There was no July 1980 list, it was only the next year they calculated it twice.
Nov-18-17  Howard: It was not in the Informant---I have the volumes from that time period.
