Sally Simpson: Shamko?
I had a touch of the Tarraschs v Fritz 6 last night. One of his notes in his '300 Games.' mentions that thanks to his excellent memory he followed theory and now had a lost game.' I recalled this game (though I forgot who played it) here click for larger viewFritz played 11...Qa6. I played 12.Ndb4 as in this game v 11...Rd8.
It is now of course a different position I was recalling. Fritz went 12...0-0-0 and I battered my head against Black and lost.
The running score between me Fritz6 (friend mode) is roughly equal. This game is in 'The Center Counter' (pub 1983) by John Grefe and Jeremy Silman which I where I first saw and remembered a bit of it. Huh! BTW (No.1) 'The Center Counter' is the correct name for this opening. Scandinavia is a region containing Sweden, Denmark and Norway and none of them appear to want it named after them. How it became known as the Scandinavian I've know idea...but it is wrong! and encourages those of a slip-shod nature to abbreviate it as the 'Scando.' It is a small wonder Barney Rubble did not post; 'Shamko playing the Scando.' BTW (No.2) Grefe and Silman say Black resigned after 22.Qe5+
Diligence kicked in and I felt duty bound to see if I could throw any light on where the extra moves came from. Chess Life 1977 has Shamkovich playing 10 games but none against Leverett.
Chess Life 1978 also a load of Shamkovich games but none against Leverett.
The were a few Center Counters (as Chess Life correctly calls this opening) on the same page as some Shamkovich games in the August 1978 issue but not played by him. Then I got wrapped in reading all about Walter Browne walking out of the United States Championship (1978) and that was that. |
