Kibitzer's Corner
Dec-04-03  Spitecheck: Opening of the day, is castling after ...g4 a brave move? This guy just get's creamed, like so much melted icecream. Moves like g4 show utter disdain for the black pieces, just like in the Kere's attack in the Chevy though it's merits are born in simplicity. g4 poses black's best piece a nasty question (the king's knight on f6). Actually it's more a rhetorical question LOL. Used to be that we gambited the f-pawn and c-pawns now we have evolved to giving away those junky pawns in the corner's.

Spitecheck

Dec-04-03  Catfriend: I think it's a great game by Shirov! Of course, the idea of 13.h4!! isn't original, but it's very stong here, combined with opened g-line and strong diagonals
Jan-19-04  d4Nf6Bg5: Why even bother playing 37...Rd8
Jan-19-04  Almanzor2: <d4Nf6Bg5> Black must have been in time pressure, trying to solve all the tactical nuances of the position. Therefore he did not see the checkmate. But even after 37... Qg5+ 38.Qg5, Rg5 39.d7+ Black loses pretty quickly.
Dec-21-05  DeepBlade: maybe he wanted to be finished quickly.
Dec-21-05  Jim Bartle: Thorhallson used up much of his time deciding on 14...Bb4, and was left with less than 30 minutes to reach move 40. He had almost no time from move 35 on.
Dec-31-05  DeepBlade: 37. ...Rd8 allows the mate in one,

Better is;

37... Qh6+ 38. Qxh6 Rxc3+ 39. bxc3 gxh6

And now White has an mate in 7, which goes like,

40. d7+ Nxd7 41. exd7+ Kf7 42. d8=Q Rc2+ 43. Kxc2 Kg6 44. Qd6+ Kf5 45. Rd5+ Kxe4 46. Qe5#

Jan-28-06  harcee sarmiento: maybe shirov WAS best last decade.. but now.. he LOST! ,,,not just to one but TWO unrated player in keres memorial!
Jan-28-06  Jim Bartle: I'll admit Shirov hasn't met the expectations by Linares 98 and his match win over Kramnik. In fact it's Topalov who's taken the spot many figured would belong to Shirov.

Still, (unrated) losses to unrated players in a two-day rapid tournament shouldn't be taken too seriously.

Jun-18-06  harcee sarmiento: <jim bartle> oh???... how come! it is worst to loose on such unrated when youre such magnificent!
Apr-20-08  Justawoodpusher: Actually with 34...♕g5+ Thorhallsson could have even won, but of course that's hard to see if you have little time left on the clock. I admit that I found this by analysing this game with Fritz. The line that follows is forced: 35.♕d2 ♖xd1 36.♔xd1 ♕g1+ 37.♔c2 f2 38.e7 ♔d7 29.♖f4 f1♕ and black is better.
Sep-24-09  Travis Bickle: A great game by Shirov!
Nov-29-10  sevenseaman: < Justawoodpusher 35.Qd2 Rxd1 36.Kxd1 Qg1+ 37.Kc2 f2 38.e7 Kd7 29.Rf4 f1Q> is avowedly a good alternative for Throstur but it now stays off the page of history wherein the game belongs to Shirov and his enterprise.
May-23-15  whiteshark: From Alexei Shirov's book, Fire on Board, in the intro to this game:

<"This game introduces a novelty which should probably be called the "Shabalov-Shirov Gambit", as suggested by Mikhail Krasenkov. As I remember, 'Shaba' expressed the idea first, although it occurred to us almost simultaneously while we were listening to pop music and lazily moving the pieces around.">
