wwall: 15.Nd4 may be weak. Perhaps 15.O-O instead.

Perhaps 21.exf7+ (instead of 21 Rxd4) Rxf7 22.Rxd4 Ra1+ 23.Rd1 may be OK for White if Black plays 23...Rxd1+ 24.Kxd1. Black may play 23...Qa7 24.Kd2 Qa5+

23.Qxd1 Qe5+ 24.Qe2 Qxb2 25.O-O Qd4+ 26.Kh1 and Black may survive.

24.Kc1?? may be the losing move. Perhaps 24.Ke1, since 24...Qa7 25.exf7+ Kf8 26.Rf1 holds for White.

After 26.Kb1 Ra8 wins.

Mar-28-14  zydeco: White was overly optimistic in this game and Smyslov played cannily and defensively and killed him.

I agree with <wwall> that 15.0-0 was better. White may have been worried that after 15.0-0 Ra5 it's hard for him to execute the Nd4-b5 maneuver.

20.Nf3 seems like the right moment for white to admit that he's slightly worse, then follow it with 0-0 and maybe c4.

24.Ke1 doesn't seem all that much better than the game continuation. Black can probably win pretty easily with 24....Qa7 25.exf7+ Kf8 26.Rf1 Qa1+ 27.Kf2 Qxb2 but even better is 24.....Rd5 25.Qf3 Qe5+ 26.Kf2 Qxb2 with the threat of .....Rf5 and .....Qxc2+.

Jun-24-14  jerseybob: With 7.e5 white sets up an ambitious center, but 8.Qe2? is not the way to maintain it. 8.Ne2, preparing c3, is the only move, but even then black has play, sniping from the fringes. 24..Qa7! is a world champion's move.

This is far from being the case: 8.Ne4 is the most common line, with the same intention of bolstering White's centre, and has long been known to be good.

Jun-24-14  jerseybob: I stand corrected. And..it's time to turn in! Night all!
Jun-10-15  poorthylacine: Zydeco, just one point in your variation 24.Ke1: Indeed, 24...Rd5 is then mortal, but after 25.Qf3 Qe5+ 26. Kf2, Black has to avoid 26...Qxb2? because of 27.Qxf7+ with checkmate, and play rather 26...Rd2+ 27. Kf1 f6 and White can surrender...

Honza Cervenka: 13.Bb3 would have been better.
