Apr-07-07  Grega: Fischer never played king's indian vs. Spassky (prior 1992 exhibition match). He probably feared Spassky's mastery of Samich variation. Boris's results with KID suggests this and this game is one of many examples of his versatility.
Apr-07-07  M.D. Wilson: Spassky's KID games are among the most instructive.
Apr-07-07  Atking: <M.D. Wilson: Spassky's KID games are among the most instructive.> yes indeed I like it too. There is more than one similarity between this World Champion and the actual. A very flexible approach. A mystery for me: Why Boris Spassky didn't use the closed line against Fischer in their first World championship ? He handles this line as well as the Saemisch against KID
Apr-07-07  talisman: one of spassky's 2 victories over stein.stein was one of the few players with the flare of tal or a bronstein.
Dec-01-16  Albanius: Possible conclusion to game:
41 ... Ne2+
42 Ke3 Nxg1
43 Kf2 Nh3+
44 gxh3 gxh3
45 b4 Ke7
45 b5 Kd6
46 b6 Kc6
47 b7 Kc7
48 Kg3 and W just eats the B pawns, while B K is confined to blocking the protected passed b-pawn until W has time to bring up the K and promote.

offramp: I do not know about Spassky's score against the King's Indian, but I know that Petrosian, Korchnoi and Kramnik all have huge plus scores against that opening.
Mar-26-17  cunctatorg: Bobby Fischer played KID against Taimanov and Larsen back in 1971 but he never played this opening against Petrosian, not to mention Spassky...

However Garry Kasparov was a devoted practitioner of this lovely, "adventurous" and exciting opening...

Mar-26-17  Strelets: <offramp> <cunctatorg> The database shows that the young Gazza had the white pieces each time he played Petrosian in tournament chess. I wonder if he'd have ventured the KID against the ninth world champion if he had Black in any of those games. He went +2-0=3 against Korchnoi with it.
Sep-19-18  ewan14: Did Fischer not play the King's Indian against Petrosian in 1966 ?
Sep-19-18  Strelets: <ewan14> Yeah, a 28-move draw in the Fianchetto Variation at the Piatigorsky Cup. He also used it in the 1970 Herceg Novi blitz championship, winning this time.
