Stean in an interview in CHESS, June 2011 calls this one of the most embarrassing games of his life.

As he was leaving the board a little old lady came up to him and asked why didn't you play 41.Qe7+.

"It's alarmingly obvious, the little old lady saw it and I didn't."

41. Qe7+ Qxe7 42. Rxe7+ Bf7 43. Rxa7

Same article Stean says he wrote the highly praised 'Simple Chess', a book that it seems everybody has learned something from, because he wanted to give answers to the questions he was asking himself when reading other chess books, in these other books the answers were not there.

Right. I'm off to find this little old lady and show her some of my games.

Jul-11-15  Howard: Too bad Karpov's father died during the tournament, thus prompting his sudden withdrawal.
