Jul-07-04 | | EyesofBlue: I'll join the ranks of those who "missed" this puzzle. I saw that the white queen was unguarded and under fire after any movement of the black rook at f5, but I couldn't get the rest of it. |
|
Jul-07-04 | | Dimitar Panayotov: acirce wrote: On 30..Nxe3 31.Qxe3 Re8?? there is 32.Nxf5 but Black wins after the intermediate 31..Rfd5, how exactly after 32.Qxd5?
But I missed Nxf5 also:) |
|
Jul-07-04 | | acirce: <how exactly after 32.Qxd5?> The Q is on e3 in that line, you quote it yourself: <31.Qxe3> So that's not possible. 31.Nxf5 is pretty much the only move I think. |
|
Jul-07-04 | | bob725: This was difficult. Got Monday and Tuesday. Thought Wednesday would be pretty easy though. |
|
Jul-07-04 | | ezumpf: I missed this. I was looking at 30....Rxf2. 31. Qxg6, Rxa2. It looked promising, but i couldn't see it through. Too much going on. I, typically, see half a plan and try it to see what will happen. If anyone could tell me the crux of why my line fails I would appreciate it. |

 | | tpstar: <ezumpf> Good idea, only one move too slow. See how 30 ... Rxb5! threatens Mate in One (31 ... Rb1++) while 30 ... Rxf2!? threatens the Ra2 plus the Qg6 but now there's no mate because White's King can escape to f2 = 30 ... Rxf2!? 31. Qxg6 Rxa2 (31 ... Re2+? 32. Rxe2; 31 ... d2+? 32. Kxf2) 32. Qxd3 (much safer than 32. 0-0!? d2) Ra1+ 33. Kf2 Rxh1 34. Qxc4 with an easy win. Therefore 30 ... Rxb5! is a better Discovery than 30 ... Rxf2!?, although your line would succeed if White's King was on f1 instead (= 30 ... Rxf2+!). Keep at it! |
|
Jul-07-04 | | MatrixManNe0: Hello all, I haven't posted for a while, but I HAVE, in fact, been checking the puzzles, etc. I, too, suspected Nxe3, but I suppose after the exchange, white ends up with enough material, etc. to win. Also, I'd like to give rookie44 a warm welcome to chessgames.com And... yea. that's my message.. |
|
Jul-07-04 | | Dimitar Panayotov: <acirce> You said black are wining after Rd5 but white can simply take this Rook with the Queen. |
|
Jul-07-04 | | ezumpf: Thanks tpstar. I kept thinking I could get my other rook to the f8 square. I could if my opponent would allow me to move twice in one turn. A gentleman would. |
|
Nov-20-14
 | | tpstar: <ezumpf> You're welcome. ;>D |
|
Nov-20-14 | | patzer2: The discovered attack 30...Rb5! solves today's Thursday puzzle with a double attack which threatens mate-in-one and also the unprotected White Queen. |
|
Nov-20-14 | | BxChess: I went with 30...d2, 31 Kd1 Rxf2.
The white queen has to protect both e3 and b1, to prevent mate, which it can't do. If 31 Ke2 Rxf2 wins the white queen. |
|
Nov-20-14 | | M.Hassan: "Medium"
Black to play 30...?
Exactly equal in material:
30...........d2+
A)
31.Rxd2 Nxd2
32.Kxd2 Rxf2+
33.Kd1 Qxe4 White Queen falls
34.Kxf2
B)
31.Ke1 Rxf2
32.Qxg6 Nxe3#
C)
31.Ke2 Rxf2+
32.Kxf2 Qxe4
33.Rd1 Qxe3+
34.Kg2 Qxd4+
Black is far stronger in material now
Time to check
================
I admit the game line is more impressive. I did not think of 30...Rxb5 that leads to a forcing mate next or else loose the Queen. |
|
Nov-20-14
 | | al wazir: I never even looked at 30...Rb5. My move, 30...Nxe3, manifestly fails because of 31. Qxe3 (not 31. fxe3 Qxb3+ 32. Kd2 Qf2+, picking up the ♖ on a2) Re8 32. Nxf5 Re6 (32...Rxe3+ 33. Nxe3) 33. Kd2, leaving black with ♕+♙ vs. ♖+♖+♘. |
|
Nov-20-14 | | agb2002: The material is identical.
White threatens 31.N(Q)xf5.
The white can can only move along the first rank and the white queen is defenseless. This suggests 30... Rxb5, threatening 31... Rb1# and 31... Qxe4: A) 31.Nxb5 Qxe4 - + [Q+P vs R].
B) 31.Qxg6 Rb1#.
C) 31.Nc6+ Qxc6 (or 31... bxc6 32.Qxc4 Rg1+ 33.Kd2 Rxh1 34.Rb2+ Ka8 35.Qa6 Rb8 - +) 32.Qxc6 Rb1#. D) 31.f3 Qxe4 32.fxe4 Rb1+ 33.Kf2 Rxh1 - + [R+P]. |
|
Nov-20-14 | | gofer: I am trying to see why <30 ... Rxb5> doesn't work... <30 ... Rxb5>
31 Qxg6 Rb1#
31 Nc6+ Qxc6 (Now threatening Rb1# and Qxh1# if the queen moves) 31 Nxb5/Kf1 Qxe4 (Now threatening Qxh1#)
31 f3/f4 Qxg3+
32 any move Rb1#
~~~
Okay! It does work... ...well that only took a couple
of minutes unlike yesterday! Yesterday had SO many lines
to check! |
|
Nov-20-14 | | diagonalley: <M Hassan> ... i don't suppose it's any consolation(!), but my shot was practically identical to yours... |
|
Nov-20-14 | | mike1: saw the game before and (by accident) remembered it.
Just wonder would to play if White chooses 30. 0-0 instead of Nd4? |
|
Nov-20-14 | | Prosperus: 30. ... Nxe3!? 31. fxe3 (31. Qxe3 Re8) Qxg3+ 32. Kd2 Rf3+ 33. Kxd3 Rxa2 |
|
Nov-20-14 | | morfishine: This looks more like a Thursday puzzle than a...wait, it is Thursday!? Now I know why I missed it: I don't even know what day it is! :) FWIW: I thought 30...d2+ was sufficient
First, the simple and flawed "mainline":
<30...d2+> 31.Rxd2 Nxd2 32.Kxd2 Rxf2+ 33.Kd3 Rd2+ Or the other option
<31.Kd1> 31...Nxe3+ 32.Qxe3 Qg4+ 33.Kxd2 Rxd4+ 34.Kc3 Rf3 but the simple 33.f3 refutes this :(
***** |
|
Nov-20-14 | | patzer2: The losing moves in the game were 29. Nf3? and 30. Nd4?? Instead White could have played 29. a4 = equalizing, or, failing that, 30. Qxc4 Rxf3 to putting up more resistance. After 29. Nf3? Nxc4!, the White Queen was overworked. Obviously 30. Nd4?? Rxb5! didn't make her job any easier. |
|
Nov-20-14
 | | rodchuck: I thought similarly to Morphishine 30 ...d2+, 31.Kd1 Rxf2 32. Qxf6 Nxe3#, but 31 Rxd2 spoils this line |
|
Nov-20-14 | | eblunt: < M.Hassan: >
30...........d2+
A) 31.♖xd2 ♘xd2
32. ♕xf5
and white is now a pawn up |
|
Nov-20-14 | | Chess Dad: I don't normally get Thursday puzzles, but for some reason I saw the back-row mate potential with Nc4 covering d2, d3 covering e2, and White's pawn on f2. So I saw 30...Rxb5. I wasn't sure how White would respond, so I didn't go further, but the game line certainly wasn't the best of a bunch of bad choices. |
|
Nov-20-14 | | kevin86: Black threatens mate...and then the queen. White is lost! |
