Kibitzer's Corner
May-28-09  pastpawn: Hm, why not 17 ♗xf5? If 17 ... ♘xd5 18 ♗xh7+ ♔xh7 19 ♘xd5 and White is a pawn up.
May-28-09  Imposter: <pastpawn>

True, but it's not worth much. Keep going with <19...c6 20.Nc3 d5!> and you'll see why:

Black has a massive center, and excellent lines for his rooks, more than outweighing White's pawn in overall value.

The line chosen by Larsen did not leave him on the defensive.

May-28-09  Albertan: Hi pastpawn, you are right, Larsen could have been up a pawn after your continuation. After 19...c6 20.Nc3 you can see possibly why Larsen did not play this continuation, as it would have given Suttles three connected pawns in the cen ter, one of them passed, which is more than sufficient compensation for the pawn. (The program Deep Rybka 3 evaluates that Suttles would have sufficient compensation for the pawn and in fact be a bit better off). I hope this helps you understand why Suttles did not play your continuation.
Sep-16-09  mack: Harper and Seirawan simply write that 'White should take the pawn with 17.Bxf5 Nxd5 18.Bxh7+' (Chess on the Edge, Vol 2, p.481).
