Feb-18-05 | | Scardini: Nunn wrote after this game that so far as he could remember he hardly calculated a single variation more than a couple of moves deep during the entire game (Secrets of Grandmaster Chess). |

 | | piltdown man: Finally a decent Tal pun. |
Dec-12-15 | | happyjuggler0: What happens after 31)...Nd7? That doesn't look lost to me, but I far from a GM.... |
Dec-12-15 | | Retireborn: <happy> After 31...Nd7 White can just play 32.Bg6 which forks two black pieces and the Nh7 has nowhere to go. |
Dec-12-15 | | morfishine: <piltdown man> Speak for yourself. The fact of the matter is it sucks, just like all the other "Tal puns". What makes this failed play-on-word suck to epic proportions is that <CG> specifically asked people to stop submitting "puns" for worn out names like Tal, (not to mention Nunn or Short, or Sax, etc). Yet this ignorant moron submits it anyways, (who knows, maybe this person doesn't know how to read), and then incredibly <CG> ignores its own request and lets it through. I mean, how pathetic can you get? ***** |
Dec-12-15 | | Funology: so you submitted it, right? |
Dec-12-15 | | LuckyChucky: Aw,c'mon, morf is probably not an ignorant moron - he's just an angry guy ranting about less-than-cosmic issues. |

Dec-12-15
 | | Fusilli: Problems with the puns based on names (the overwhelming majority of the puns): a) they bias the selection of the GOTD toward names that lend themselves to puns; b) often, the pun could be applied regardless of the result of the game; c) often, the pun could be applied to ANY game of the player in question; and/or d) the quality of the game does not matter as long as it was played by a pun-friendly player. This pun business should go, and the GOTD should be selected on the grounds of playing quality and nothing else. If people love puns, maybe the player of the day should get one instead of the GOTD. (But that would then bias the selection of player of the day.) |

Dec-12-15 | | kevin86: A good game vs Tal, the master of the sacrifice. |
Dec-12-15 | | CJC: Agree with Fusilli here 100%. Word play based on the play of the game is usually pretty clever, but puns based on the names of the players don't describe the game itself, and give by themselves no compelling reason to view the game. |

Dec-12-15 | | Moszkowski012273: 16...d5? is horrible. |

 | | piltdown man: <morfishine> Yeah, I agree. But this wasn't a bad one, I thought, as it also plays on the opponent's name too. |
Dec-12-15 | | waustad: I confess <Fusilli> that when I come up with a pun that they accept (which is very rare), the usual path is to come up with a quip and then to look for a winning game by the person involved. If it also involves a piece I look for an appropriate sac or perhaps the opening involved. The jokes are often macaronic (lovely word) since they players frequently don't speak English as a first language. People who get stuff posted usually make a pop culture reference. |

Dec-13-15 | | newhampshireboy: I have no comments regarding this game but isn't rule 3 grossly violated by morfishine when he refers to another commenter as an ignorant moron? I play chess and come here to study the beauty of chess and have fun but morfishine has certainly created some ugliness here and there is enough of this trash on the internet already. If I owned this site he would be banned permanently. But I don't so I guess rule 3 is not taken seriously which is too bad! |
