Korora: I was barking up the completely wrong tree; I'd thought it was an exchange combo on g7.
Mar-27-25  latebishop: I wonder why Vaganian didn't just play 30. Rg7?
Mar-27-25  latebishop: Now I think I see why: 30.Rg7 Ne2+ 31. Kf1 Qh1+ 32. Ke2 Bf3+! 33.Kxf3 Qxd1+ 34.Kg3 Qxh5 etc
Mar-27-25  minasina: <latebishop: Now I think I see why: 30.Rg7 Ne2+ 31. Kf1 Qh1+ 32. Ke2 Bf3+! 33.Kxf3 Qxd1+ 34.Kg3 Qxh5 etc> ... but it is still winning

  takebackok: Keep it going Thursday, looked at 30. Rxd4 Qxd4 31. Nf6 Rde7 32. Qg5 e5 to stop Rg8+ now what missed something.
Mar-27-25  Walter Glattke: 31.Nf6 always wins a piece: 31.-Ne2+ 32.Kf1 Qxh6 33.Rxh6 Kg7 34.Rxh7+ Kxf6 35.Rxd7 Bc5 36.Bd3 several petite combinaisons possible instead
Mar-27-25  mel gibson: I chose the game ply 30. Rxd4.

Stockfish 17 chose a different ply:

30. Nf6

(30. Nf6 (1.Nf6 Qxh6 2.Rxh6 Ne2+ 3.Kf1 Kg7 4.Nxd7 Ng3+ 5.fxg3 Kxh6 6.Kf2 Kg5 7.Bd3 Rd8 8.Nc5 Rb8 9.Rd2 Rb4 10.Be2 Kf6 11.Bf3 Bc4 12.g4 Rb5 13.Nd7+ Kg5 14.gxf5 exf5 ) +3.77/47 276)

score for White +3.77 depth 47.

if I force SF to play the game ply:

30. Rxd4 Qxd4

(30. .. Qxd4 (1. ... Qxd4 2.Nf6 Rde7 3.Qg5 e5 4.Bxf5 Qf4 5.Nxd5 Qxg5 6.Rxg5 Rf7 7.Bc2 e4 8.Rh5 Rb8 9.Ne3 Rbf8 10.Bxe4 Rxf2 11.Rxh7+ Kg8 12.Nd5 Rf1+ 13.Kh2 R8f7 14.Rh4 Ra1 ) -3.50/47 260)

score for Black -3.50 depth 47.

benveniste: Georgiev missed a draw with 34. ♕d1+
Mar-28-25  Halldor: Didn't get this. I tried to find out if White could afford a quiet move like 30. R-Kt7 in such a tense position (as others have mentioned). — It was fun to figure out Black's counterattack in this case, starting with 30...Kt-K7†.
