Jun-26-06  altair7: If the rook stayed on f8, then it would be a smothered mate.
Jun-26-06  CapablancaFan: Also after 23.Nh6+ if 23...Kf8? 24.Qg8+! Ke7 25.Qxg7+ etc.

keypusher: Rubinstein must have missed ...Rf6 when calculating his sacrifice. His position was much too good to force a draw.
Dec-18-06  Bridgeburner:

The inexperienced Rubinstein seems to have mistaken a positional sacrifice for a tactical attack on the King and played the wrong move, unless he was seeking the draw. In other words, he probably didn't understand the nature of the position he was dealing with.

Correct was 20.Bxg6! hxg6 21.Qxe6+ Kh8 22.d5! Rf6 23.Qh3+ Kg8 24.Ng5 Nf8 25.Ne4 c5 26.Nxf6+ gxf6 27.Rd1 Rd8 28.e4:

White has a Rook and two pawns for a Knight and Bishop, a powerful protected passed pawn, a spatial advantage, a secure King and an enduring initiative. An older and wiser Rubinstein would be expected to nurse this sort of advantage to an eventual win.

Jan-15-08  rusich: Akiba played in All Russian champinship because Poland was part of Russia then.So we can call Akiba "Russian player".

"1/2 Rubinstein played well but missed the best continuation and had to settle for a draw."
