Phony Benoni: Might be a fair Wed/Thu puzzle. <32...Rxb3> was probably a mistake, as it allowed a strong attack from White featuring an active queen.

<33.Re8> threatened 34.Rxf8+ Kxf8 35.Qe8#. Covering e8 with 33...Qc6 would not have helped: 34.Rxf8+ Kxf8 35.Qe7+ and mate follows. Black made some room with <33...g6>, but then <34.Qc4> came in strongly, hitting the rook on b3 while threatening 35.Rxf8+ Kxf8 36.Qc8+.

Black tried to stop the queen from reaching the last rank with <34...Qc3>, but <35.Qh4> wrapped things up, threatening 36.Qd8 as well as 36.Rxf8+ Kxf8 37.Qh6+. Black was unable to stop everything, and giving up ♕ for ♖ was quickly shown to be futile.

Kholmov's only loss in the tournament, but he still wound up tying for first with Averbakh, 1.5 points ahead of Ciocaltea.
