May-24-03  trestor aleostro: If I remember right, this game won the brilliancy prize in the 1974 Manila International Tournament. It's amazing that the White Bishop at f6 hung there for 8 moves (capturing it would permit mate).

  Jonathan Sarfati: The Soviet Union had such strength and depth that a player as strong as Vasiukóv couldn't make it to the Interzonal or Olympiads. When he played outside the USSR, he was a powerful competitor. His lifetime score against Larsen, one of the best of the West, was 4–0. He won this strong tournament with 10.5/14.

  perfidious: Outsiders, thy name was legion: in addition to Vasiukov, there were Tseshkovsky, Shamkovich, Lein et al, who were all very strong in their own right, yet had no chance of making any of those formidable Soviet squads.
