Jun-07-06  Sporka Child: When black plays 51...Kd3, the immediate question is, are you really going to blockade that passed pawn with the rook?

But when black follows with 52...c2! one can see 54 ...Rxh7 becoming more or less forced in a few moves. It's very hard to not look at this as a blunder from move 51. While it is only a few moves deep, without having Mr. Benko's razor sharp technique, most players would look at that passed h pawn, and would no doubt hear Nimzo whispering in their ears. Most would try to stop it before it ever became a threat. Especially since you can get a sense of the situation coming from a few moves before 51.

The pawn promotion from moves 55-58, looks like a half technique-tactic. Followed by the technical bishop ending ... brilliant.

I love Benko's games because I always get that tingly feeling of "come on, we're going on a ride!"

May-30-08  Fast Gun: Subtle bishop tempo moves near the end to promote the pawn:
Aug-28-16  zydeco: 5....Qe5 is a daring idea - apparently of Benko's. The position around move 14 looks fairly terrifying for black - he is severely underdeveloped and white has a lot of promising-looking ideas, but Benko defends without too much trouble and keeps the pawn all the way through the endgame.

perfidious: My impression of Matanovic was that of a solid, professional East European GM who was perhaps less at home in just these dodgy situations; he has sacrificed a pawn, gotten great play, but where exactly to go from there?

One wonders how matters might have gone with Tal playing White instead.
