Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-02-04  nikolaas: It's not true that Matanovic beated Larsen with 1 against 0 by 1 draw.I've got a funny game here which proves something else.
Apr-20-04  nikolaas: Alright, they don't seem to have any intention to submit it - I guess I did something wrong again - so here it comes: B.Larsen-A.Matanovic Zagreb1965

1.c4 Nf6 2.g3 e6 3.Bg2 d5 4.Nf3 Be7 5.0-0 0-0 6.d4 Nbd7 7.Nbd2 c6 8.b3 b6 9.Bb2 Bb7 10.Rac1 Rac8 11.e3 dxc4 12.Nxc4 c5 13.Qe2 cxd4 14.Nxd4 Bxg2 15.Kxg2 Nc5 16.Rfe1 Qd5+ 17.f3 Rfd8 18.e4 Qb7 19.Ne5 Bf8 20.Rc2 Rde8 21.Rec1 Nfd7 22.Ng4 Na6 23.a3 Nb8 24.Rc4 a6 25.Qc2 Bxc4 26.Qxc4 b5 27.Qc3 b4 28.axb4 Bxb4 29.Qe3 e7 30.Rc4 Rc8 31.Nxe6 Qc3 32.Rxc4 Nh6+ 1-0

Apr-20-04  AgentRgent: Nikolaas: Could you please check your notation on that game. Some changes I found are 23...Nab8, 25...Rxc4 but I have no idea what you mean from 29...e7 on.
Apr-21-04  nikolaas: Sorry for that, my only excuse is that whan I posted it, I hadn't any chessboard near me. Changes: 29....Be7, 31....Rxc4 and the moves you mentioned. Again, sorry for that.
Apr-21-04  nikolaas: What's still wrong?
Apr-21-04  AgentRgent: Ok, I found the correct finish: 29...Be7 30. Rc4 Rc8 31. Nxe6 Rxc4 32. Nh6+ And it is 1-0 because 32...Kh8 33. Bxg7# or 32...gxh6 33. Qxh6 and mate is unavoidable (...Bf6 34. Bxf6).
Apr-22-04  nikolaas: Yes indeed. You got a 100% score.
I think it was well worth all those troubles, no?
Apr-22-04  AgentRgent: Indeed.. a wonderful finish! I've submited the full game to Chessgames.com
May-10-04  nikolaas: Now there are 2 versions! Larsen vs A Matanovic, 1965 is the right one.
Jul-14-07  ALEXIN: Jon Speelman commented this endgame in "Endgame Preparation". In his opinion, 50. Kc6 lost too because of Rxf5 and the white king can go to g5 (via e3 and f4) reaching a winning ending.
Feb-06-22  jerseybob: The third of 3 pummellings Larsen's Dragon took in this tourney, following Fischer and Averbakh.
