Sep-01-04  iron maiden: <Knight13> Is there even any game you DON'T like?
Sep-02-04  Giancarlo: lol, good one Iron Maiden. I was starting to think I was the only one who noticed
Sep-10-04  Elrathia Kingi: Please observe our posting guidelines:

3. No personal attacks against other users.

Sep-10-04  Shadout Mapes: I don't think iron maiden's comment was offensive. Rather, I think it's a valid question and I'm curious to the answer myself.
Sep-10-04  pawn52: <He took on the world, and won... well, I think the world needs to spend some time improving its game. Perhaps it should order six billion chess books for us to read> Take note that probably 1/3 (or more, or less) of the world population hasn't even heard of the word "chess".
Sep-10-04  francescog: <pawn52> that could be true, but I wonder how many chess players are there. We should decide what a "chess player" is (e.g.: you are one if you know the word chess, or if you know the rules and have played a handful of games, or if you know the en passant rule, or if you come to chessgames.com at least once a week...?) but I think that in any case we should reach HUGE numbers.

Sep-10-04  poktirity: <pawn10> Espedially thet 1/3 needs to be educated ;)
Sep-10-04  poktirity: By the way does anyone get the pun?
Sep-10-04  JustAFish: <poktirity> The only thing I can think of is the common, colloquial meaning of "world on a string", which is, essentially, that you'e got the world under your control. I suspect that it may, also, be a vague reference to this song:

http://www.lyricsfreak.com/f/frank-...

Which was heard many times during during the recent US coverage of the Olympics as part of an ad Campaign.

Sep-10-04  ellipotrix: <Iron maiden> and <Giancarlo> give the guy a break, he's only 13 and he's entitled to take part.
Sep-10-04  athyn: Who is on the "World" team?
Sep-10-04  kevin86: It sounds like a online game in which the viewers could log on a move---and the majority move was the one played.

The pun reminds me of the introduction to the great comedy:IT"S A MAD,MAD,MAD,MAD WORLD! in which the "world" was pulled, stretched, etc.

Sep-10-04  athyn: Makes me think of "I'll poll the audience on 'Who Wants to be a Millionare' ". I wonder how many times chess related questions have been asked on that show. The audience is usually right, but not always.
Sep-10-04  iron maiden: <Elrathia Kingi> and <ellipotrix> I never denied Knight13's right to express his opinions; I just questioned them. I don't know why I try, though, since he never responds.
Sep-10-04  Giancarlo: <<Iron maiden> and <Giancarlo> give the guy a break, he's only 13 and he's entitled to take part.>

and I'm only 15, so what's your point? Besides now <Knight13> has finally stopped, and maybe it was because of our persistence to make an impact on his posts. I think it makes him into a better contributor to the website, instead of an annoyance. At least now he makes decent posts. And I think it's thanks to the people who demanded better from him.

Sep-10-04  notsodeepthought: I'm suprised the "World" lost against a moderately strong GM (or is he an IM?) like Kouatly. Oh well, Bachar luck next time.
Sep-10-04  Shadout Mapes: After listening to the kids on my bus today argue about whether or not "German" is a language, I don't have much faith in the world's chess abilities.
Sep-10-04  Backward Development: The outpost wins again! regardless of blacks' response, the knight outpost spawning the protected passed pawn wins. and whenever a piece retreats to the back rank, it facsinates me in its boldness, so to say. a bit more of a shock technique.
Sep-10-04  misguidedaggression: "German" isn't a language... But Deutsch is. ;)
Sep-11-04  kevin86: That makes me remember the person thought that ESPN meant "sports in Spanish"----it's actually close to Espanol(tilda over n) which of course means SPANISH in Spanish
Aug-27-06  chessarmenia: i would have played 7 e5
Jan-31-07  Aspirador: "World on a string" is a famous movie by Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Original title is in German "Welt am Draht".
Apr-12-07  aazqua: This game isn't that good. The world certainly is a little schizophrenic. Kasparov's game remains a clear favorite up until this point, although it looks like the world is getting it's act together against nickel and schulman.
Jan-09-08  D.Observer: <aazqua> <<The World> vs <Timmerman>> is now in progress.
Mar-15-09  WhiteRook48: a 2473 could beat the world?!
