Fusilli: Amazing game by old Viktor, exploiting his resources to the max. And why not, he was only 70.

plang: At about the same time that it became fashionable to to play 4..a6 (late 90s) it also became fashionable for White to delay Bc3 with 4 e3. Several months earlier in Khenkin-Morozovich Germany 2001 White had played 10 Bd2 and the game had ended in a draw; 10 e4!? was new. 14..Ke7 15 0-0!..Bxe3 16 fxe..Qxe3+ 17 Kh1..Qxd3 18 Qb4+..Ke8 19 Rxf6..gxf 20 Ne4 would have been winning for White. After 17 0-0 White had good compensation for the pawn. 22..Re7 23 Rfe1..Bg6 24 Rxe7..Kxe7 25 Bxg6..hxg 26 Nxb7..Rb8 27 Rc7+..Ke6 28 b4 would have been strong for White. 25..Bxd3? was an error; Black could have maintained equality with 25..a5. Short of time Black played 36..Rh1?; a better defense would have been 36..g4 37 Nd4..h5 followed by ..Rh2 with better counterplay than he got in the game. It was not necessary to give up the a-pawn; 42 b4 would have been an improvement. 49..Nc7+ would have put up more resistance.
