Jul-19-04  Jesuitic Calvinist: If you reply ...e5 against the king pawn opening, you need to know how to play against the Vienna, which can be tricky.

20...Bg4! was the key move here; even apart from that move, it was a neat ending.

Jul-16-05  azaris: I wonder why people play 4.Bxf7?! instead of the clearly better 4.Qh5. One of my games went:

1.e4 e5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.Bc4 Nxe4 4.Bxf7+ Kxf7 5.Nxe4 d5 6.Qf3+ Kg8 7.Nc3 Be6 8.d3 Nc6 9.a3 Qd7 10.Nge2 Be7 11.Bd2 Rf8 12.Qg3 Rf6 13.O-O Rg6 14.Qf3 Bg4 15.Qxd5+ Qxd5 16.Nxd5 Bxe2 17.Rfe1 Bf3 18.Nxe7+ Nxe7 and Black won (0-1)

tpstar: <azaris> Great game - White's Queen was pretty low on moves. Maybe 13. 0-0-0 would have improved. I like how you consolidated your position.

It's so tempting to disrupt Black's castling, plus the Rh8 is blocked out of play, although these factors are only temporary. After 6. Nc3 I saw 7. Qf3+ but missed 7. Qh5+, thus the Pawn sacrifice.

Jul-16-05  azaris: <tpstar> The central pawns and bishop pair give enough activity for Black that he has no trouble untangling his kingside. Even your pawn gambit seems to lead to a near winning position for Black.

tpstar: <azaris> OK thanks. So White's Queen was really stuck on the Kingside; maybe 11. Ng3 Rf8 12. Qe2 instead, but I agree that Black stands better.

tpstar: Trapped by my own crappy analysis. I faced the same line again, so I tested out 6 ... d4 instead of the Pawn sac 6 ... Be6!? like before. White played 7. Ne4, then 7 ... Nc6 8. Qf3+ and at the last second I noticed 8 ... Kg8? 9. Qb3+ mates. So 8 ... Ke8 and it took several moves to castle by hand and untangle my position. Still I'm strangely proud of this one, clutching a gift Pawn and converting a delicate Q&P endgame.
