Aug-18-07  newton296: 30) ka1 !! that was a great trap and timmerman jumped in with both feet only to see it answered with the crusher nc5!! now blacks kings is suddenly surrounded! great play by white!
Aug-22-07  kkshethin: I think 33..Rfg8 instead of Bxd4 was the decisiv mistake by the black. Am i true?

Mateo: <newton296: 30) ka1 !! that was a great trap and timmerman jumped in with both feet only to see it answered with the crusher nc5!! now blacks kings is suddenly surrounded! great play by white!> 30.Ka1! was not a trapp, just a great move. I say not a trapp because Black has just no defence at all. What else could he play, instead of 30...Nc2+?.

Mateo: <kkshethin: I think 33..Rfg8 instead of Bxd4 was the decisiv mistake by the black. Am i true?> If 33...Bxd4, then mate in two with 34.Qe8+!. The point is that the Bishop does no longer control "d8".

SwitchingQuylthulg: Could it be that Black actually moved 33...Rgg8? First of all, 33...Rfg8 makes no defensive sense as it allows 34.Qxe8+! Bd8 35.Qb5+ and mate next, which 33...Rgg8 stops. Secondly Black's last move, ...Re8, makes no sense without a defending rook at g8.

On a different note, Black's game was perhaps not hopelessly lost, before he missed the defensive trick 33...Qxb2+! 34.Kxb2 Bxd4+ and 35...Bxc5 which would've left him with R+B vs. Q. (It was Crafty, not me, that spotted this combination.) As Black still had this opportunity on the next move (even if White's queen had become a bit more active), I think 34.Qxd5 should have been played rather than Qa6.

Mateo: <SwitchingQuylthulg: Could it be that Black actually moved 33...Rgg8?> I don't think so. After 33...Rgg8, Black does no longer control "d5". Thus White can play 34.Qxd5 threatening mate on "b7". To stop that threat Black has to sacrifice his Queen (34...Qxc5). That would be a simple win for White.

SwitchingQuylthulg: <That would be a simple win for White.> Simple as opposed to a forced mate in three? Of course, you're right in that all other databases I've checked also have the move ...Rfg8 and that 33...Rgg8 34.Qxd5 is also a simple win (just like any move except ...Qxb2+).
May-20-08  RandomVisitor: 24...Bg5! wins for Black.

What is Black's threat?
