Leon Pliester passed away this morning (23rd October) in Rotterdam. His friends notified us. Pliester suffered from a disease of the liver, which had affected his kidneys too. The IM from Amsterdam had a University degree in Psychology. He died at the age of 58 years.

During the last years Pliester played for BSG Bussum. He played his last game against Mart Nabuurs of De Stukkenjagers on September 15th 2012. The game reached a draw after 10 moves.

In 1990 he participated at the Dutch Championship in Hilversum. He ended shared 10th out of 11 players with 4 points. In 2005 he played in Group C at the Corus Tournament, and scored 5 out of 12 points. One of his victories there was against strong GM Jevgenji Aleksejev.
