Apr-01-18  whiteshark: Aus Bremen fuhren Carl Carls, Wilhelm Hilse, Richard Antze und, <falls mit dem in der Deutschen Schachzeitung erwähnten <"Bechstedt"> identisch, Robert Bechstedt zum Kongreß nach Mannheim.> Im Meisterturnier lag Carls mit 6 Niederlagen, 3 Remisen und nur 2 Gewinnen abgeschlagen zurück. Ähnlich erging es Hilse im Hauptturnier A, und <Bechstedt wurde in der 4. Gruppe des Hauptturniers B Letzter.> Nur Antze erzielte im Nebenturnier B einen geteilten ersten Platz.

On page 1, #5 the handwriting implies that from <Aug 1914> to Nov 1919 he did frontline duty and was in war captivity.

From the tournament hall direct into the trenches.

It could explain his poor performance...
