Apr-26-05  InspiredByMorphy: What could black have done to improve? 12. ...e3 doesent seem like a good move.
Sep-10-06  siilarsi: First of all I belive he should have accepted Blackmar's second gambit with 4: exf3, thereby transposing into a position similar to the BDG, then avoiding traps leading to a check on h5 or g6 eg. Qh5+. he should also aim to develop his kings bishop as early as possible followed by .. 0-0. Then he should defend solidly against the strong attacks coming shortly.

Having done this he would be looking on to an endgame favouring black, due to him being a pawn up. All this is easier said than done, but i belive that white is playing a flawed opening, although it is very sharp.

FSR: Opening Explorer shows that Black actually does very well in this line, notwithstanding his quick loss in this game. Here is an interesting game that is, as yet, not in the database:

perfidious: <FSR> While I played both colours in the Staunton at times, your post points up the viability of all this for Black.

The one game I had in 4.f3 was as Black against Bill Kelleher in the 1985 Boylston CC championship; my recollection is that he got a very good position when I played inaccurately in the middlegame and I only won following a blunder by Bill after adjournment (now <there's> a quaint old phrase!!) when matters were still in his favour.

FSR: <perfidious> Ah yes, adjournments. I remember those things. I even remember adjournment analysis, which was a lot harder in the pre-Fritz/Rybka/Houdini/Stockfish/Komodo days.
