Jul-30-05  gambitfan: 5. Bc4 d5 6. Bb3 ???

why not : 6. ed !

Jul-30-05  bomb the bishop: <gambitfan> I agree, exd5 seems much stronger, but there's not a lot of games to compare to
Jul-31-05  hesyrett: Yes, 6 Bb3 is a lemon, but after 6 exd5 Qe8+ White's alternatives are all unappealing: (A) forfeit castling by 7 Kf1 Bd3; (B) retreat by 7 Be2 Nxd5; or (C) allow the trade of Queens by 7 Qe2 Qxe2+ 8 Kxe2 Bd3 followed by 9 ... Re8(+) when White has 3 pawns and an inferior position for his Knight.

Honza Cervenka: <why not : 6. ed !> After 6.exd5 Bd6 black is clearly better. Three white extra Pawns are not worth of the black extra piece and black is going to take over the initiative soon. The only developed piece of white - Bishop is blocked by Pd5 and black has opened lines for quick development. I would be happy being black here.

<Honza Cervenka>7.0-0 ♖f8 8.d4 ♔g8 with advantage, according to Bilguer in the "Handbuch". Black has artificially castled his King into safety and is ready to develop.

scormus: the database stats are very misleading. The natural move, 5 Bc4+, has a high win percentage but I suspect it's busted after 5 ... d5.
Mar-01-24  Allderdice83: The dud is 4. Nxf7? It's an unsound sacrifice that reasonably strong players easily refute. Still, if I were going to start playing the Petrov, that move looks dangerous enough that I'd want to learn some theory. Stockfish says it's about -0.4 after 5. d4, about -0.8 after 5. Bc4+.
