Jul-09-02  mprchess: This is funny!!! Well, Bird's opening was played completely wrong. Oh wait Bird wasn't around at the time to teach 'em how to do it right.

Sneaky: Exactly! Bird wasn't the first to open with 1. f4, just the first to WIN with 1. f4!
Jul-14-02  refutor: inspired by this game, during the ICC marathon this weekend (from which I'm still seeing bishops) I played this line v. the bird...it was ugly as hell and as a result, i'm taking the 4. ... Qg5?! from's gambit out of my repetoire :)

Sneaky: refutor, did you miss 13...Nf2+ ?
Jul-14-02  refutor: i missed a bunch of things...it was a 24-hour marathon :)
Apr-30-03  pegasus: didn't white see the checkmate?
Apr-30-03  mdorothy: I just saw something like this in a puzzle somewhere... I can't remember where, but that doesn't matter, as long as I can use the idea in a game.
Jul-24-03  Zire: This checkmate position is very simmilar to that of the 2 move checkmate. Had that been developed yet or was this just a coincidence?
Aug-10-03  kj45345: The 2 move checkmate was never developed it is just there if one side is dumb enough to make it possible
Feb-05-04  Whitehat1963: Is this NN's most embarassing loss?
Apr-06-04  N N: I did get better with Bird's Opening! :) Take NN vs Marshall, 1908
Oct-25-04  Knight13: 4. Nf3 is much better.
Oct-25-04  jcmoral: <N.N.> lol
Oct-25-04  Saruman: I used to play 4.Bg4 after Nc3 in bulletgames...With the "secret" hope of black playing 5.h3?? Bg3#. But I like to show my superiority with 5.-Qh4+ 6.Nxh4 Bg3# with a spike and a queen sacrifice :-). Also I have tried to use my h-pawn in the attack with great results. After 5.-Bg4 just premove the h-pawn down the file and you'll win I promise!
Oct-25-04  sneaky pete: This is J.Du Mont, who co-authored with Tartakower two famous game collections published mid 20th century. He is apparently also the inventor of the time machine.
Oct-25-04  Saruman: err...it was supposed to 4.Nf3 and 4.-Bg4
Jun-03-05  rexeterna: <kj45345> A little late on the reaction time in this forum, but where is it that a checkmate in two moves is possible, assuming "one side is dumb enough to make it possible"?
Jun-03-05  aw1988: The only known checkmate in two moves: 1. f3 e5 2. g4 Qh4#
Jun-04-05  Jaymthetactician: This game totally rules! Though NN would defeat DuMont with d3,Qg6. DuMont seem's like a combinational expert for his day, perhap's he's better then Philidor.
Jun-04-05  dzanone: Hi <Jay>, I guess I have to disagree with you on DuMont's ability. This game is more about NN's lack of knowledge about securing the position of the King. I teach a lot of children how to play and I get to win a lot of games similar to this, and I'm certainly no Philodor. Many kids have to lose a dozen or more games at the f2, f7 weakness before they take it seriously.
Jun-06-05  Jaymthetactician: But that combination totally rules! I also cant believe Fritz estimates Philidor at 2500! And Lasker above Bobby Fischer! (If one was to do create an elo start list for Shredders database for all games, it is funny how Lasker is 3003! While Zukertort is put at 2800?!?!? And Steinitz just above Kasparov?!?! I was expecting Kasparov to be at the top of that list (Kasparov is #12, Which is too low for him), but Emmanuel Lasker? Shouldnt Capablanca be higher then him then? And Fischer is estimated at 2750! He is NOT worse then Zukertort or Steinitz! period.
Jun-06-05  Jaymthetactician: Also a fictional story I made up that is video game material:

Many chess players were traped in a time portal, for what purpose this serves they do not know, only a fine tactician as jaymthetactician can free them, he heads to New York, 1858 unknowingly in a time portal:

Jay: Where am I?

New Yorker: Why this is Manhattan!

Jay: Hmmm, Havent seen this part before say youre goofing me, I cant see a highrise! (I just realize it's 1858 by looking at a newspaper) Oh, I'm back in time! Say, do you know about Paul Morphy?

Why no ones seen him in ages! But there is a 10 year old boy by the name of Bobby Fischer who's skill at chess has already exceeded his! He trounced Paulsen 10-0 at the Franklin chess club!

Jay:were is he now?

Well, he went over to europe and is currently undefeated there, Anderssen fell, as did Staunton.

(meanwhile in the year 1930 at the AVRO tournament)

Morphy: This place is strange! Hmmm? The year 1930? Well, I must catch up on the current theory of this time period!

Meanwhile at Lineres 2000:

Philidor: What is this strange place? Look's to be so ahead of the times! And what is this screen with chesspieces on it? (Philidor loses to Shredder in 20 moves) WOW! How does such a thing aquire such knowledge! (Philidor constantly plays against computers to increase his skill at chess)

Jun-06-05  hintza: WTF...
Jun-06-05  Jaymthetactician: And the rest: I acquire a time travelling device from defeating Steinitz, bring Fischer back to his time period, I go to AVRO and bring Morphy back to 1858, and Philidor goes back to 1750 with his newfound computer knowledge.
Jun-06-05  Swapmeet: lol hintza, my thoughts exactly
