Oct-01-04 | | crepo: 17 Nbxd4!! Nice sacrfice good one Speelman! |
|
Oct-01-04 | | Andrew Chapman: If 24...Bxe4 then 25.Rxh5 wins. |
|
Feb-13-05 | | Albertan: Speelman missed a pretty way of finishing the game: 23.Re8! Raxa8 24.Bxf6 winning. |

 | | tpstar: 23. Re8!? Qe6 24. Rxe6 fxe6 25. Be4 Kf7 and Black lives. Well coordinated attack by Speelman. |

 | | tpstar: Yikes! Totally missed it. Good pick-up, and <Albertan> was right on with a sparkling finish. Thanx. |
|
Apr-20-10 | | Everett: After <20..f6>, is the best move <21.a3 Nxd3 22.Bd5+ Rh7 23.g4> ? |
|
Sep-16-23 | | Brenin: Black's Q has to protect the N on f6, otherwise Bxf6 and Qg7 mate, so 21 c5 is obvious, forcing Qd8. Then 22 Re5 threatens 23 Rxf5 gxf5 26 Bxf6, so 22 ... Qd7, and now 23 Re8, threatening 24 Qxf8+ and 24 Bxf6, both with mate, wins. |
|
Sep-16-23 | | mel gibson: I didn't even consider that line today.
Stockfish 16 says:
21. c5
(21. c5 (c4-c5 Qd6-d8 g3-g4 Bf5xg4 h3xg4 Nb4xd3 Bb2-c3 Nd3xf2
g4xh5 Nf2-g4 Qh6-f4 Nf6xh5 Qf4xg4 Qd8-d3 Qg4-f3 Ra8-d8 Ra1-d1 Qd3xf3 Bg2xf3
) +5.05/48 513)
score for White +5.05 depth 48. |
|
Sep-16-23 | | vajeer: I also considered 22. Re5 instead of 22.g4
<Brenin> has covered Qd7 response. Another alternate line is - 22..Nxd3, but then 23. Rd1 cripples black's position.Black's position is so bad at the puzzle situation - knight is pinned, queen is pinned (of sort) to defend the knight, rook on f8 cannot move due to threat of Rxd8, rook on a8 can at the most come to a6, but is of no much help. And remaining two minor pieces are also not in a position to either attack or defend. |

 | | Teyss: 21.c5! was not so much to remove the defender for f6 but for e5 since on d8 the BQ still protects the Nf6: if right away 21.Re5? Nxd3! e.g. 22.Rd1 Qxe5 23.Bxe5 Nxe5: Black has R + 2Ns vs Q and White's attack is gone (-1.2 at 31 ply). click for larger viewHowever if in the game line 22...Nxd3? now 23.Rd1 works: 23...Nxb2 24.Rxd8 Raxd8 25.Rxf5! and White has Q + B vs R + 2Ns with a good attack (+7.6 at 31 ply). click for larger viewBlack cannot take the R: 25...gxf5? 26.Qxf6 Nd3 (or other) 27.Qg5+ Kh7 28.Qxh5+ Kg7 29.Qg5+ Kh8 30.Qxf5 followed by 31.Be4 threatening Qh7# so Black will at least lose the N. click for larger viewSide note: in the game did you figure out why on 21.c5 Black didn't play 21...Qa6 still protecting the Nf6?
That's right, 22.c6! |

Sep-16-23 | | agb2002: White has a bishop and a pawn for both knights. Black threatens Nxd3.
The knight on f6 blocks the diagonal a1-h8, the black queen protects that knight and the pawn on g6 also protects that knight. These details suggest g4 (intending g5), c5 and Re5 (intending Rxf5). -----
In the case of 21.Re5 Nxd3 22.Rd5 Qe6 23.Bc3 Rad8 Black seems to hold. -----
In the case of 21.c5 Black has 21... Qd8 (21... Qa6 22.Bxb7) and White only seems to have lost some control of d5. -----
In the case of 21.g4:
A) 21... Nxd3 22.Rad1
A.1) 22... Nxb2 23.Rxd6 cxd6 24.gxf5 Nd3 (due to Qd2, trapping the knight) 25.Re3, followed by fxg6, is winning. A.2) 22... Qa6 23.Rxd3 (23.gxf5 Nxb2 24.fxg6 Nxd1 25.Rg7 Nh7 26.gxf8=Q+ Rxf8 35 27.Rxd1 should also be winning) 23... Bxf3 24.g5, followed by gxf6, wins. A.3) 22... Bc8 23.Rxd3 Qa6 (23... Qxd3 24.Bxf6 wins) 24.g5 wins. A.4) 22... hxg4 23.hxg4 Bxg4 24.Rxd3 Qa6 25.Rg3 Bc8 (25... Bh5 26.Bxf6 Qxf6 27.Qxh5 wins a piece) 26.Rxg6+ fxg6 27.Qxg6+ Kh8 28.Re7 Rg8 29.Qh6+ and mate next. B) 21... Bxd3 22.g5 as above.
C) 21... hxg4 22.hxg4 Bxg4 23.Re4 Nxd3 (23... Bf5 24.Rh4 wins) 24.Bc3 looks good for White. For example, 24... Qc5 25.Rxg4 Qh5 26.Qxh5 Nxh5 27.Bxb7 with the better endgame. |

 | | Jimfromprovidence: I picked 21 c5 hoping for 21...Qa6 like <Teyss> figured out. I did not see 21...Qd8. Nevertheless, 22 Re5 was a great move. click for larger viewIt took me a long time to see the reason for it, the threat being Rxf5 gxf5 Qg5+. |

Sep-16-23 | | alshatranji: I had 21.g4, which apparently wins, though as a second option (the first being c5). | | scormus: Needed to give some thought to this, and after a while decided 21 c5 Qa6 22 c6 looked pretty good. A bit disappointed B went .... Qd8, and again after thinking for a while, picked 22 Re5. 22 ... Qd7 appears to protect the Bf5, but 23 Be4 is completely winning anyway. |
