Kibitzer's Corner
Jun-06-04  AdrianP: This is a very nicely played endgame. Svidler is able to activate his own king whilst completely locking the Black king out of play.

plang: In this ancient line 17 c4 is a recent attempt to to improve White's chances. In Bologan-Korneev Spain 2002 Black had played 20..Re4?! (game not included in this database) and White had gone on to win; 20..Bb5 was new. 20..0-0 21 Rxc4..Bd6 keeping the White rook off the 7th rank was an alternative. Black does not have time for 24..Rxa2: 25 Rdd7..Kf8 26 Rxe7..Rxe7 27 Bc5. If 28 h4..h5 29 gxh+..Kxh5 30 Rxg7..Kxh4 31 f3 and Black finds his king caught in a mating net.

Zviagintsev after 33..Re1:
"The first wave of the attack has been successfully repelled, but Black's position remains difficult. He has to watch for the opponent's numerous threats, his king is completely decentralized, and the exchange of rooks leads to a hopeless bishop ending."

Of course not 49 a6?..Rc3+ and 50..Rxe3.

Svidler's endgame play here is quite instructive.
