LIFE Master AJ: This game is annotated for my January, 2004 issue of my "Game Of The Month" web site.

plang: 5..d5!? is double-edged leaving the two c-pawns vulnerable. 6..Ne7 was a new move; 6..a5 and 6..Be7 had been played previously. 9..f6 was certainly playable but Nakamura chose a sharper alternative. 11..d4 12 Qe1!..Rg8 13 e5..Rg7 14 Qe4!..Rxg2+ 15 Kh1 would have been very good for White. White would have had a strong attack after 13..Nh4 14 Nxh4..Bxe5 15 Nf5..Bxa1 16 Qxh7..Rxg7 17 Nxg7+..Ke7 18 c3. With 15..Ba6?! Black underestimated White's temporary piece sacrifice 17 Nd2!; better would have been 15..Qd8! with unclear play. 20..Bb7?! didn't help to activate Black's bishop; Bologan suggested 20..e5 when after 21 Qxd6..Rxd6 22 Bxe5..Rdg6 23 c4 Black would have had decent drawing chances. Black sacrificed the exchange with 23..Qf4!? but 23..Qd7 24 Rg8 would not have been any better. 32..Qd2+ would have been a better try as 33 Qf2?..c3 would have been a bit awkward for White.

Certainly an exciting fighting game - props to both players.
