Sep-23-09  goslar: It seems strange that white did not claim a draw by threefold repetition at move 59, since he seems to be clearly losing.

  Phony Benoni: <goslar> Indeed, White should have been down on his knees begging for a draw by that point. But it's surprising how many strong players do not understand the triple repetition rule correctly. I've personally saved a couple of lost positions against Masters because of it.

That might explain why Balla didn't claim the draw, but why did Kostic allow him the chance? Another possibility is that the rule was phrased differently in Hungary in 1921, and may have required exact repetition of a series of moves. That doesn't quite happen here, since White's first move in the sequence is Nh4-g6+, not Nf8-g6+.
