Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-25-06  you vs yourself: I played 5.h3 and 6.d3 after 4...Bc5.

Here's the rest of the game:
5.h3 Nf6 6.d3 0-0 7.0-0 b5 8.Bb3 d5 9.exd5 Nxd5 10.a4 b4 11.c3 Rb8 12.a5 Ne7? 13.Nxe5 Ng6?? 14.Nc6 1-0.

Even before my opponent's blunders, for the first time I felt comfortable playing Ruy Lopez. Any comments on my 5.h3 and 6.d3, which are meant to show why 4...Bc5 is useless at that point, would be much appreciated.

Jan-24-08  The Chess Express: As you pointed out 12...Ne7 was a mistake. After 12...bxc3 13. Nxc3 Be6 black may be slightly better.

In the game 10. Nxe5 would have won a pawn. For example Nxe5 11. d4 Nf4 (best) 12. dxc5 Qg5 13. Bxf4 Qxf4 14. Qd2 etc.

Black should played 7...d5. This opens the position which favors black’s lead in development, and avoids the ♕ side weaknesses associated with b5. If black fails to do this and plays 7...d6 then white can gain the advantage by playing for d4 with 8. c3 Qe7 9. Re1 Ba7 10. Bc2 Re8 11. d4 etc.

After 7...d5 8. exd5 Qxd5 9. Nc3 Qd6 Black is fully equal. Your 5. h3 and 6. d3 plan looks a bit too passive.
