Kibitzer's Corner
Dec-17-05  KingG: Why did Fedorov play this line(9.Bb5)? It has been known to be not very good since C Chandler vs A H Williams, 1977.

And the game Short vs Shirov, 1999 indicated that White has nothing better than a draw.

A better try is 9.Nd5!, which Fedorov had played in Fedorov vs S Safin, 2001 and came very close to winning(J Aagaard vs P A Rasmussen, 1996 showed some of the potential of this line).

Perhaps Fedorov was afraid of an improvement? Even so to play out such a tame draw with the White pieces against a lower rated player is shameful.

Feb-05-06  underrated: crummy draw, i dont see it here...
Feb-05-06  MoonlitKnight: Black is better in the final position, but Carlsen only needed half a point to become grandmaster, so he was more than willing to offer a draw, which Fedorov understandably accepted.
Feb-05-06  aw1988: He could even win after Rg4.
Apr-09-07  Atking: <aw1988: He could even win after Rg4.> If you mean 18.RxQf2 Rg4 that's not obvious for me 19.Raf1 Rxh4 20.g3 2p;B vs R but black pawns are disconnected. I think the draw is normal.
Apr-09-07  Fisheremon: Black should play 13...Bg4!? - a strategically quite unpleasant move for White
May-22-11  wordfunph: NIC: You secured the GM title in Dubai with a draw as black against Fedorov when you were a bit better.

Magnus: Yes, that was my tactic. If I have a better position and I am sure that he will not play on. Of course, I was a little bit nervous before that game. But I also expected to get a better position if he played the King's Gambit (laughs!).

Sep-26-14  Pulo y Gata: <Perhaps Fedorov was afraid of an improvement? Even so to play out such a tame draw with the White pieces against a lower rated player is shameful.>

It's always fun looking back, you'll surely stumble on gems like this one.
