Mar-10-05  soberknight: Ilyin-Zhenevsky = 14 letters
Konstantinopolsky = 17 letters.

The total of 31 letters easily beats Capablanca vs. Znosko-Borovsky. Can anyone top this?

  Phony Benoni: M Bonch-Osmolovsky vs Konstantinopolsky, 1949 takes it up to 32.
Mar-28-09  Calli: For the full name how about V Tabunshchikov vs Znosko-Borovsky, 1905

With forenames and patronymic, I get 63 letters (I think!).

Mar-29-09  andrewjsacks: You could also try Mamadzhan Mukhitdinov versus M Bonch-Osmolovsky, in this database, 20 letters playing the impressive full 36 letters to a draw! Perhaps there's a rule that if the total letters of the players' names exceed 50 letters, the game must be a draw...

  Phony Benoni: Too bad we don't have any games between Lionel Adalbert Bagration Felix Kieseritsky and Baron Tassilo Heydebrand und der Lasa.

  Phony Benoni: And, now that I look around a bit, here's some info from The Source: Octavio Figueira Trompowsky de Almeida
Mar-30-09  andrewjsacks: Good point, Phony Benoni. Also interesting would be to try to find a game in this database between two players with the shortest full names. Yes?
Mar-30-09  andrewjsacks: I'll begin the bidding with Lohr - Max Euwe (11 total).
Mar-30-09  Calli: Using NN would be cheating, so maybe J Wiik vs O Lie, 1977

  An Englishman: Good Evening: You should probably start with games between two Asian players. How about this contest: shortest surname vs. the longest?
Mar-30-09  andrewjsacks: Calli, I like your spirit, but those are not the full names given here....
Mar-30-09  andrewjsacks: An Englishman has the spirit as well!
Mar-30-09  andrewjsacks: Calli, I had not previously noticed your post for that 1905 game. Well done!

  Phony Benoni: Here's a candidate for shortest surname against longest: W So vs Azmaiparashvili, 2008

For shortest full name against lognest full name, I'll put in a plug for S Urusov vs Ben, 1862

Mar-30-09  andrewjsacks: Thank you for the good suggestions, Phony.
Mar-30-09  andrewjsacks: By the way, Konstantinopolsky and Azmaiparashvili are the only two surnames of noted players, at least which come to mind now, that have as many as six syllables. No doubt that is not the record...
