Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-06-05  Milo: Good find MUG. Of course, white should try 13.Bxe5, I imagine.
Jul-06-05  THE pawn: 14.Qg7# for white.
Jul-06-05  psmith: <THE pawn> do you mean 15. Qg7#? But the pawn on e5 is in the way.
Jul-07-05  THE pawn: Woups, I got confused with another game.
Jun-29-06  McCool: In this game, however, the opponents were probably not playing seriously but amusing themselves and their honourable spectators. It was the last round of the amateur tournament in the international Chigorin Memorial congress, and this draw assured Rotlewi of second place behind Alekhine, while Eliashov at best would take undivided fourth place instead of sharing 4th-6th. The playing strength of both Rotlewi and his opponent was not normally to be laughed at, and in a serious encounter White would hardly have missed the interediate 13 ♗xe5! ♗xe4 14 ♗xg7 ♗xg2 15 ♗xf8, when Black has no timefor the symmertrical 15...♗xf1 on account of mate.
Jul-17-09  WhiteRook48: too smymmetrical
Dec-16-09  TheBish: Record for longest symmetrical game, according to Tim Krabbe.
Dec-17-09  Shams: it's symmetrical for one move!

  WannaBe: Well,

1. I would have played 3. d4

2. Knowing it's all Russian 1909, they probably were all in a conspiracy against Fischer.

3. I never play symmetrical, hence, therefore, ergo, <everyone> should play 1... c5! =)

5. 0-0 0-0
6. P-Q3 P-Q3

Aug-08-10  Infohunter: Here is the game mentioned in the note to White's 13th move: Traxler vs J Samanek, 1900. Basic chess teaching holds that Black cannot get away with aping White's moves indefinitely--unless White permits it, as in this specimen.
Aug-08-10  asianwarrior: <once> you gave us the best reason fpr choosing this as the best sample of a symmerical game/
Aug-08-10  C4gambit: the second and third moves are not symmetrical. Is there any game where every move is symmetrical?

Phony Benoni: <TheBish> <C4gambit> KrabbĂ© gives a different version of this game with the moves <2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nc3 Nc6>, which does makes it symmetrical throughout.

If you're looking for the longest game that finishes with a symmetrical position, there's always Max Weiss vs J Schwarz, 1883. And I'm sure we could find some long endgame that ends symmetrically with only a few pieces on the board.

Actually, I wonder if the final position is truly symmetrical in the strict sense of the word. Would "symmetrical" actually describe this final position, from HIARCS vs Chess Tiger, 2004:

Once: <C4gambit: the second and third moves are not symmetrical. Is there any game where every move is symmetrical?>

And, strictly speaking, the last two moves are not symmetrical either. White plays Qg2+, but black's Qg7 is not check.

But I think I have found three perfectly summetrical games, courtesy of the Complete Chess Addict.

The second game of Fischer-Spassky, Reykjavik 1972 went 1. resigns.

Miles-Reuben, Luton, 1972 was a variation on the same theme with 1. draw.

Okay, so you are thinking that games without any moves at all cannot be called symmetrical? So I give you Van der Sterren - Povah, Lloyds Bank Masters, 1978 - 1. e4 e5 2. draw.

Aug-08-10  sethoflagos: <Infohunter: ... Basic chess teaching holds that Black cannot get away with aping White's moves indefinitely>

But does this imply that black should take the initiative in breaking symmetry?

Though typically arising from semi-Tarrasch lines

can be reached quite reasonably by a fully symmetrical line:

1 d4 d5 2 Nf3 Nf6 3 e3 e6 4 c4 c5 5 Nc3 Nc6 6 Bd3 Bd6 7 0-0 0-0 8 b3 b6 9 Bb2 Bb7 10 Qe2 Qe7

and in principle rooks can also develop symmetrically without black being disadvantaged. In fact, shouldn't black wait for white to initiate the exchanges here?

Aug-08-10  Chessmensch: What a waste of time. It's evident that Rotlewei's bark was bigger than his bite. :-)
Aug-08-10  SuperPatzer77: Holy Toledo!!! LOL LOL LOL

Too symmetrical!!

Rotlevi missed 13. Bxe5! Bxe4, 14. Bxg7 Bxg2, 15. Bxf8 (No way Black can have a symmetrical move of 15...Bxf1 because of a mating threat of 16. Qg7#)

Aug-08-10  eightsquare: 3. Bb5! Breaks any possible try try for a draw by symmetry :)
