Dec-20-05  DAL9000: Why is 20. ♕b5 necessary? What happens on, say, 20. ♖ad1?

It looks to me like Black can't sac the exchange, on account of (20. ♖ad1) 20... ♖xd5 21. ♖xd5 ♕c6 22. c4.

Dec-20-05  mr. nice guy: If 20.Rad1, then 20..Rxd5. 21.Rxd5 e5 wins material.

perfidious: This move-order with 1.e4 c6 2.d4 g6 is a speciality of Rogers', but in all the events we played together, I never remember anyone playing what Hort long ago recommended as the most testing line: 3.c4.

As to White playing either rook to d1 at move 20, the suggestion wins more than merely material. After 20....Rxd5 21.Rxd5 e4, Black gets a decisive attack, as the light-squared bishop, soon to arrive at f3, is worth more than a rook, as Friedel undoubtedly perceived when he opted for the ending.
