Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-11-06  BabyJ: Against Bonin (the USA), Dlugy
plays one of the masterpieces of the
Royal Game! The position after 18 d5!
is almost comical. Black's knight is
now attacked (as it wasn't on the
previous move) and cannot move.

Sep-04-09  NewLine: I love it when the battle starts from the beginning of the game. Straight to business. Punching around. Until the other king get it in his face...
Sep-04-09  AnalyzeThis: Agreed. This was a slugfest.
Sep-04-09  whiteshark: Better was 12...Bxf3 13.Bxf3 Qxf3 14.Qc8+ Ke7 15.Nc7 Qc6 16.b3!

Sep-04-09  lzromeu: 13bxf3 was premature move.
Weak atack.
Exposed the statical back rank.
Not a good black's game
Sep-04-09  TheTamale: I don't get the pun today. Anyone...?
Sep-04-09  Eisenheim: The Pun - I took it to mean that blacks incursion with his Queen was squarely defeated. In the U.S. sports teams use the phrase to mean that they refuse to lose when they are the hometeam.
Sep-04-09  JonathanJ: 18.d5 is nice!
Sep-04-09  kevin86: This game looks like a duel by two guys with axes-really bloody-but ending in a winner and a dead loser.
Sep-04-09  YouRang: <Eisenheim: The Pun - I took it to mean that blacks incursion with his Queen was squarely defeated.>

In the absence of any other reasonable explanation, I guess I have to agree.

Sep-04-09  RandomVisitor: Black should have tried 5...c5 or 5...Bb7 scoring +0.18/20.
Sep-04-09  WhiteRook48: funny
Apr-03-13  shakman: Another game ... G Kluger vs Portisch, 1958

perfidious: Never faced 5.Qa4 when played the Queen's Indian, but the line with 5....c6 always intrigued me. Near as I recall, the verdict on this gambit was the-then always helpful 'unclear'.

The line Dlugy chose was certainly a fine mess and obscure as all get out.

This is another POTD featuring two former opponents.

Dec-09-23  Brenin: White is a piece down, but 17 Qb7 wins the R and leaves Black's Q and N looking rather silly. Black's least bad response was probably 17 ... Nc6 18 Qxa8 g6, hoping for Bg7, e.g. 19 d5 Nd4 20 dxe6 Nxc3 (threatening mate) 21 Qxf3 Nxf3+ 22 Kg2 Ne2 23 Kxf3 Nd4+ and 24 ... Nxe6, leaving him the exchange down but still alive.
Dec-09-23  mel gibson: I chose other moves which were not as good or led to a draw. SF puts up a better defence so White has to work for his dinner.

Stockfish 16 says:

score for White +3.71 depth 46.
