Kibitzer's Corner
Nov-04-09  waustad: Managing an attack like this against a 1969 Bent Larsen must have been quite a thrill for an IM. It should have been for anybody.
Nov-04-09  TheChessGuy: Although it is simple, the combination with 19.Nxh5! is one that brings a grin to my face. On 19...gxh5?, Black would have been greeted by a forced checkmate, namely 20.Qh7+ Kf8 21.Qh6+ Kg8 22.Bh7+ Kh8 23.Bg6+! Kg8 24.Qh7+ Kf8 25.Qxf7# A nice finesse of calculation and a precursor to Kasparov-Sutovsky 1988 USSR Championship, where Gazza's combination on the same theme brought him the brilliancy prize.
Nov-04-09  TheChessGuy: Whoops, make that Kasparov vs. Smirin from that same tournament. I accidentally mixed up Sutovsky and Smirin.
Nov-04-09  guaguanco: 19...gxh5??
20. Qh7+ Kf8
21. Qh8# is even faster
Nov-04-09  TheChessGuy: <guaguanco> Wow, I'm just not with it today. Your variation is much more convincing.
Nov-04-09  Shams: How did Larsen even plan to defend his kingside? He should have left the rook on f8 and met 18.h4 with ...f5 19.h5 g5.
Jun-30-13  whiteshark: <TheChessGuy> I don't see any pattern-similarities to the Kasparov game you've mentioned. Kasparov vs Smirin, 1988
