Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-03-05  checkpat: prematurate resignation...
Nov-16-05  KingG: I don't know why anyone would play this ridiculous system(2.e5). Black gets a good French with his light square bishop outside his pawn chain, what more could you want?

Eric Schiller: Black is a tempo up on 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 c5, which is a playable line in the Caro Kann. Players who use 2.e5 are just too lazy to learn the main lines, and think that something is accomplished by avoiding them. Black has instant equality. That's no guarantee that Black will win, but I'd love to start every game as Black this way.
Nov-16-05  KingG: <Eric Schiller> <I'd love to start every game as Black this way.> So would i.

There is a similar situation in the Tal gambit(1.e4 c5 2.f4 d5), when some people play 3.e5?!. Black can get a kind of French structure with the light squared bishop out side the pawn chain.

I think this goes to show that everyone should have some knowledge of the French defence to be able to take advantage of positions like this(and to avoid giving their opponents an easy game with dubious moves).
