Mar-09-05  flamboyant: yep officially draw.. i was wondering what leko was doing, after 20 moves and still no draw..!
Mar-09-05  FLCLlove: <Rocafella>I believe the bishop was on c3...

Joshka: <greatgrecosghost> But i think Alekhine's "win" average is the best of all the greats.
Mar-09-05  Phoenix: Of course it's a draw. Leko's goin' for the record! Never has someone drawn all of their games at Linares.
Mar-09-05  Ulhumbrus: On 25 cxb3 Nxc5 26 Ba3 pins and attacks the Nc5 and so transforms the Nc5 from a weapon into a target.

Annie K.: <Phoenix> that's exactly what I think he's doing. :) I hope he doesn't win by mistake tomorrow and ruin everything... ;)

<cg.com>, could we possibly set a new record and follow all 3 games today? =)

Mar-09-05  flamboyant: he wouldnt take with the knight on c5.. he would have taken with the queen
Mar-09-05  Daodejing: Keres has 1058 wins und 825 draws - quite impressive.

Leko has 250 wins and 513 draws.

Mar-09-05  acirce: <Joshka> That would fit me perfectly I think, although, why would that opponent of yours NOT show up?
Mar-09-05  centercounter: Well played by Count Drawcula! He never lost site of his ultimate goal.
Mar-09-05  Ulhumbrus: After cxb3 Black is lost if he can't regain the pawn or some compensation for it. For whatever reason, Kasimdzhanov has agred to a draw.
Mar-09-05  Daodejing: Leko now has 514 :-)
Mar-09-05  acirce: < hope he doesn't win by mistake tomorrow and ruin everything...> That would be anti-climactic wouldn't it.

Guess who's the only player who has played a whole Linares tournament with NO draws? Bent Larsen of course. He finished last but still ...

Mar-09-05  flamboyant: <Ulhumbrus> After cxb3 , qxc5 and its pretty even
Mar-09-05  ewenardus: what about cxb3 Qxc5? After the queen exchange the black N on c5 definitely gives him a nedge, right?
Mar-09-05  Ulhumbrus: After 25 cxb3 Qxc5 indeed avoids Ba3 while regaining the pawn . A draw begins to look like the legitimate result, then.
Mar-09-05  Akavall: I think this position is even, perhaps they could've played longer, but I would expect a draw here.
Mar-09-05  ewenardus: <Ulhumbrus> i think black stands better. white must exchange queens, and then Nxc5 attacks b3 and e4. why a draw? the fever really has come back...
Mar-09-05  DutchDunce: <Guess who's the only player who has played a whole Linares tournament with NO draws? Bent Larsen of course. He finished last but still ... > I can match that. Just need an invite to Linares. :P
Mar-09-05  azaris: Some history of Linares:

http://www.endgame.nl/linares.htm

<The grocery stores’ tycoon Luis Rentero Suárez contracted world champion Karpov and the grandmasters Larsen, Kavalek, Ljubojevic and Gligoric in Bugojno 1980 for the third contest. He was able to realise his ideal of a strong grandmaster tournament. Twelve grandmasters played in Linares from 17 - 31 i 1981. The tempo of 40 moves in 2½ hours followed by 16 in 1 hour was applied, if Karpov participated in the 1980's.

Christiansen played the best tournament of his life. Eventually Karpov won due to a better Sonneborn-Berger score. Later the number of won games would become the criterion for shared leads. Ljubojevic stayed in Linares and married a local beauty, like Hannibal once did with Princess Imilce.>

<The miracle of snowfall had occurred in Andalusia before the tournament started and Hotel Cervantes had no heating. So the playing hall and rooms were cold. The fourth 'Torneo Internacional Ciudad de Linares’ took place from 11 until 25 ii 1983. Christiansen had not been invited. Ljubojevic withdrew because Geller participated instead of Tal.>

<Spassky played a very economic tournament and won $6000. He scored three wins and seven short draws. Karpov and Andersson nearly had the same result. Boris started the tournament with his usual ‘end of the winter’ influenza and infected other players. Tolya hated him for it.>

<Twelve strong players participated in Linares from 8 - 22 iii 1985. Karpov could not partake due to the exhausting aborted match against Kasparov. Adorjan took his place. The Soviets sent Makarychev as replacement, but he was refused. Hübner did not trust the playing conditions, stayed in the nearby Ubeda and arrived each round by taxi with warm clothes, Timman reported. Ljubojevic and Hübner competed for the first place. Ljubo won due to a better Sonneborn-Berger score. Eslon wrote the bulletin. He castigated short draws.>

<Spassky was allowed to participate if he did not play short draws. The agony lasted from 18 ii until 3 iii. An exhausted Boris begged Luis to lift the obligation. The ban on short draws became a general policy during the next years.>

<The event became a race between the technician Kasparov and mad genius Ivanchuk. This competition was very similar to the contest of Capablanca and Rubinstein in San Sebastian 1911.

Ivanchuk won the race of Kasparov. Their technical ability after the opening was similar to the level of Rubinstein and Capablanca. Like Rubinstein, Ivanchuk was mentally too unstable for the world championship quest. Rentero had a great success as the organiser, because the best players in the world participated, and only 42% of the games were drawn. Players got a bonus of $2000 if they played an average of at least forty moves per game. Beliavsky got an extra prize because he drew the least.>

Nothing new under the sun.

Mar-09-05  acirce: The TWIC report says Kasimdzhanov offered a draw after 14.Qe2, but Leko declined. Really no one can accuse him of not trying, he just for some reason doesn't manage to create much.
Mar-09-05  Dionyseus: <acirce> Hah, everyone from now on should offer Leko a draw on move 14.
Mar-09-05  Hidden Skillz: well thats what he does..consistancy..and wins by capitalizing on minor inaccuracies by his opponents.. not very interesting heh
Mar-09-05  Hidden Skillz: consistency*
