Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-29-05  fantasticplastic: Not that it seems positionally justified, but 7...Bxf3 would have been the instant move for me, praying to take advantage of that eensy-weensy isolated King Rook pawn and knowing that surviving the middlegame would be bleak unless White "cooperated."

<According to Bassi, the score of this game was given wrongly by Mauvillon due to misprints and he says that later sources (Bledow, van der Linde etc) repeated the mistakes. This version he found in an 1829 Dutch source and is now accepted as correct by Pagni etc. But Eric Ruch doesn't know what this source is? Bassi says his sources were a MS in the Amsterdam club archives and the Dutch magazine 'Vaderlandsche Letteroefeningen' 1829 page 227. TH would like to see these and until then tends to believe Diepstraten rather than Mauvillon. Bassi says that 'Among the members of the Amsterdam club was an English engineer J. Fraser, who was probably related to theplayer of the same name in the London committee against Edinburgh'. Did he have any evidence for that statement?>
