Kibitzer's Corner
Nov-05-05  PizzatheHut: The final position reminds me of the famous Alekhine-Reti game in which the rook had no squares to save the knight.
Apr-07-10  oscarwilde: It would be interesting to know the circumstances around this game. Mr Linton is obviously an amateur, may be an academic from Oxford University? Nothing is said about him in the player presentation and this is the only game connected with him. One learns from this game that its often lethal to miss the castling opportunity and that double pawns are liabilities, at least against world champions!
Apr-07-10  sneaky pete: <oscarwilde> I don't know anything about Linton, but this game is from a blindfold exhibition on May 19. One of (probably) 6 games. Bachmann (Steinitz' biographer) also gives 2 games, against Reverend C.E. Ranken and Lord Randolph Churchill, the father of, from a similar exhibition in Oxford on May 17.

MissScarlett: I think Bachmann is mistaken - there was no second blindfold display on the 19th. Linton is one of the six who started their games on the 17th, five of whom continued the next day. After which, Steinitz played a regular 12-board simul.
