Jan-01-08 | | Whitehat1963: Clever queen sac. Well-calculated. |

Jan-01-08 | | computer chess guy: 18. ♕xf8+ ♖xf8 19. ♗xc5 is also winning. There are too many threats to cover. |

Dec-12-10 | | DeepFriedLiver: Dangit! I figured out this was the Arecibo message, but I couldn't find the connection to chess! Friggin Tsagan |
|
Dec-12-10 | | Billy Vaughan: Dammit, and I was looking for Sagan-related stuff too. |
|
Dec-12-10 | | jul059: Frustrating indeed. I was looking for Sagan related, 1974 related, Puerto Rico related... many things, but not Tsagan. |

 | | OhioChessFan: Seti, Cornell, Sagan, M-Chess's 13th game, all kinds of stuff. |

Dec-12-10 | | Nullifidian: My hat's off to the person who solved this. I thought the solution was either based on a game by players with the initials S.E. & T.I., and I also hunted down the false trail of looking at Richard Reti's games. I looked for games played in Arecibo, and all for nothing. Of course, I've never heard of Tsagan. Little wonder! He or she only has four games in the database. |

Dec-04-24 | | TheaN: Hah, looking at the comments from '10 this was featured on the Christmas Hunt... I do miss those to be honest. Anyways, as for this position, it's obvious White's looking to desperado the queen. Apparently 18.Qxf8+! Rxf8 19.Bxc5 +- is actually slightly better than the text, but I preferred <18.Bxc5!? Rxf7 19.Nd6+>, as it's slightly more forcing after the queen goes. White threatens Nxf7 so <19....Qxd6 20.Bxd6 +-> is best leaving White with two healthy pawns up, or Black can attempt 19....Kb8 (Kd8 20.Nxf7+ just seems worse) 20.Nxf7, threatening Bd6 and Nxh8, 20....Qa5+ 21.b4 Qa3 22.Nxh8 +-. White picks up 2♖2♙:♕ and the f-pawn is going. |

 | | takebackok: Didn't see it all Wednesday, it's a puzzle lets go with 18. Bxc5 Rxf7 19. Nd6+ Kb8 20. Nxf7 Now what, 20...Rh7 21. Bd6 Rxf7 22. Bxc7+ Kxc7 White going to win this one. |
|
Dec-04-24 | | saturn2: I had 18.Bxc5 Rxf7 19.Nd6+
now
.. Qxd6 is white two pawns up
....Kb8 20.Nxf7 threatens Bd6 and Nxh8
...Kd8 20.again Nxh8 seems winning with the free f pawn |

Dec-04-24 | | mel gibson: I saw that but it took me a few minutes to work out that it was winning. Stockfish 17 chooses a different ply:
18. Qxf8+
(18. Qxf8+ (1.Qxf8+ Rxf8 2.Bxc5 b5 3.Nb6+ Kb7 4.Bxe7 Qxb6 5.Bxf8 Qe3+ 6.Be2 Qxe4 7.0-0-0 Qe3+
8.Kb1 Bxf5 9.Bd3 Be6 10.Rde1 Qd4 11.Bg7 Qd7 12.Bxe5 a5 13.b3 a4 14.Rf6 h4
) +6.20/38 177)
score for White +6.20 depth 38
If I force SF to choose the game ply it's only slightly weaker: 18. Bxc5 Rxf7
(18. .. Rxf7 (1. ... Rxf7 2.Nd6+ Qxd6 3.Bxd6 c5 4.0-0-0 Bb5 5.c4 Ba4 6.b3 Bd7 7.Bxe5
Re8 8.Bd6 b6 9.Be2 Rh7 10.f6 Nf5 11.f7 Nxd6 12.fxe8Q+ Nxe8 13.h4 Kc7 14.e5
Bc6 ) -5.77/43 223)
score for Black -5.77 depth 43. |

 | | An Englishman: Good Evening: To paraphrase Bobby Fischer, we have two stings at the end of this scorpion's tail. First, 20.Nxf7 and the Rh8 cannot flee due to 21.Bd6. Second, 20...Qa5; 21.b4! stops the check, attacks the Queen, and protects the Bishop. Efficient play! |

Dec-04-24 | | stacase: Move for move up to 22.Nxh8
Threatening to pin the Black Queen setting up both of Black's Rooks was cool. I didn't see the rest of it. |
|
Dec-04-24 | | vajeer: I went with 18. Qxf8, good to know it turns out to be stronger than the text as per SF analysis. The position is so overwhelmingly favorable for white that Black will have to give up too much material in the end. After 18. Qxf8 Rxf8 19. Bxc5 b5 Simple 20. Bxe7 bxc4 should win too.

White can continue with 21. Bxc4 or Bxf8, both winning |
