Phony Benoni: I think it was Bronstein who said that the greatest weapon in chess is having the move.
Mar-08-22  TheaN: <40....Rxg2+> screams to be played, and leads to a fast mate in both lines: 41.Ke3 Rh3+ 42.Ng3 Rhxg3# and <41.Kxg2 Qf1+ 42.Kg3 Qh3+ 43.Kf2 Rf1#>. The final exchange of moves is somewhat amusing, as it's essentially just to make the queen and rook swap places.
Mar-08-22  TheaN: Weirdly enough, SF doesn't recognize the #4 on move 40. It gives #5 with 42....Rh3+, instead of Qh3+.
Mar-08-22  Brenin: After 40 Qc5?? the mate by 40 ... Rxg2+ 41 Kxg3 (else 41 ... Qxe2+) Qf1+ etc is easy to see. White could have had a draw by 40 Rc7+, e.g. 40 ... Kxc7 (40 ... Kd8 or Ke8 41 Rc8+) 41 Qc5+ Kd8 (or Kb8) 42 Qd6+ with perpetual check. No doubt time trouble caused White to miss this. Black was winning comfortably until 37 ... Qxc2 allowed White to take the c-file with 38 Rc3, whereas 37 ... Qc7 would have held the advantage.
Mar-08-22  raymondhow: < Weirdly enough, SF doesn't recognize the #4 on move 40. It gives #5 with 42....Rh3+, instead of Qh3+ > Funny, that's the mate I was planning initially... didn't see the quicker mate until I was two moves in.

  al wazir: 40...Rxg2+ 41. Kxg2 (41. Ke3 Rxe2+ 42. Kf3 Qf1+ 43. Kg4 Rg2#) Qf1+ 42. Kg3 Rh3+ 43. Kg4 Qg2+ 44. Ng3 Qxg3#.
Mar-08-22  mel gibson: Easy today except there were a few moves which looked good but weren't.

Stockfish 14.1 says:

40... Rxg2+

(40. .. Rxg2+ (♖h2xg2+ ♔f2xg2 ♕d1-f1+
♔g2-g3 ♕f1-h3+ ♔g3-f2 ♖h1-f1+) +M4/245 1

Black wins _ mate in 4.

Dionysius1: <Confidently expecting an easy Tuesday 😂>R Wade vs R F Boxall, 1953. And here it is. Easier than yesterday I think.
Mar-08-22  saturn2: I went with the game move 42...Qh3 not Rh3
Mar-08-22  agb2002: Black has a rook and a pawn for a knight.

White threatens Qc7#.

Black can resume the attack with 40... Rxg2+:

A) 41.Kxg2 Qf1+ 42.Kg3 Qh3+ 43.Kf2 Rf1#.

B) 41.Kf3 Qxe2#.

C) 41.Ke3 Rh3+ 42.Ng3 Rhxg3#.

Mar-08-22  AlicesKnight: Found ... Rxg2+ to clear the way.

Are we seing extra pop-ups now when we go to POTD window? Mildly irritating ....

Mar-08-22  stacase: <Dionysius1 Easier than yesterday I think.>

That's for sure.

Teyss: <AlicesKnight: Are we seing extra pop-ups now when we go to POTD window? Mildly irritating ....> Yes and GOTD, quite intrusive. If we can understand CG needs advertising to survive, there are limits to popup invasion.

So I won't give you the easy reply "You can become premium member" because I sympathise with non-premium users (as well as with myself when I don't want to connect). Some are very active here and shouldn't be inconvenienced.

Mar-08-22  Lloyd Gross: At first I thought 40...Qxe2+ was the solution, but didn't notice your other two better choices 40...Qe1+ and 40...Qf1+.

gawain: Once again I had to stop working on the puzzle in order to make progress! "The pause that refreshes" (that old Coca-Cola slogan) has become a necessity for me. Possibly a sign of cognitive decline--or at least inflexibility.
Mar-08-22  johnnydeep: Much easier for me than yesterday. At least my week won't be a total loss.
